Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I'm training to run the Oakland Marathon on March 28 as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives.

This is my second Team in Training event. Last year, I completed the Nike Women's Marathon and raised $2,703.77 to help find a cure for blood cancers. While I was training for the marathon, I found out that at least six people I knew had family members with one of these diseases. I also have a leukemia survivor in my own family.

I couldn't believe I was connected to so many people with a blood cancer. But when I learned more about how common these cancers are, it wasn't so surprising. Here are a few facts:

• Every four minutes, one person is diagnosed with a blood cancer.
• Every 10 minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer.
• Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is the second fastest rising cancer (after melanoma) in incidence and death rates in the U.S.
• Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among people under 20.
• New cases of blood cancers will account for about 10 percent of all new cancer cases diagnosed in the U.S. this year.

The good news is that survival rates for most blood cancers are increasing. By donating to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, you'll help these survival rates continue to increase until a cure is found, and you'll provide valuable services to blood cancer patients.
