Racing to Save Lives
I am looking for a penny and a few heroes who will help me find it. Let me give you the details.
As many of you know, Ted and I have been struggling for the last 5 and a half years with Ted's Leukemia. We were told when he was first diagnosed that it would be a marathon to arrive at a cure, and it has been. At this time, over two years after his second stem cell transplant, Ted is still struggling to recover from the transplant and its side effects. While Ted may be cured, the cure involved horrendous physical and emotional pain for both of us. The only cure for Ted's cancer is a stem cell transplant that had about a 50% chance of killing him. Since Ted has had two transplants, you statisticians will note that his overall chance of surviving the cure alone is 25%, not very good odds. Clearly Ted has beaten the odds, but it is also quite clear that we need a better cure. Ted and I are committed to finding that cure for two reasons. The first reason is that Ted can never have another transplant. If he relapses again, there is no cure. The second reason is that most people do not beat the odds, and we have a dream of a world where leukemia is not a threat. Nobody should have to go through what we have been through.
The heroes we are looking for are the special, wonderful people who can spare a few of their hard earned dollars to help us find the penny that will push us over the line to a cure. That penny is out there somewhere, and we are determined to find it. You might wonder if the dollars these heroes give are really helping, even if the penny we are trying to find isn't in there. We recently saw a movie which was a biography of a young man who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1961. There was no cure at that time, and after extensive treatment to keep him alive as long as possible, he died within two years. Today, millions of people are living out their lives in spite of having had leukemia because of the dollars donated by other heroes. Ted's transplants were different even within a span of 3 years. Any penny donated gets us closer to that final penny we are looking for, and makes it more likely that more people will survive.
In order to help find that penny, I am in training for the San Diego Rock and Roll marathon, with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program. Ted completed this marathon last year, but I was unable, so I am going to do it this year. For both of us, doing a marathon is a symbol of the cancer marathon we are still running.
Would you like to be a hero? Would you like to participate in curing one of the most horrible cancers out there? Would you like to help Ted survive?
If you would like to make a tax deductible donation of your pennies to help us find our penny, you can send me a check, or visit my web site at http://pages.teamintraining.org/sd/rnr09/mwilcox
to make a donation with your credit card. Every penny is important to our cause, and everyone who donates is a hero to hundreds of thousands of cancer survivors and their families. At least 75 cents of every dollar raised goes directly toward finding a cure, or giving financial support to patient families like ours.
Thanks for your help,
