Mama Mary is Racing to Crush Cancer

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I am stepping out, no, running out, of my comfort zone by committing to run a half marathon in October up the unforgiving hills of San Francisco. I have become a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training so as to have some guidance through this daunting endeavor, and also to add a little umph to my step by doing it for a higher cause. Team In Training raises funds to help find cures for various forms of blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling not only blood cancers, but all forms of cancer. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line --a cure!

Though I have not been personally affected by blood cancer, I have lost many people dear to me as a result of various cancers. I am running in memory of them, namely my dad, Dick Burt, and my sister, Marci Hayes.

I know we are in the midst of a money-crunching recession, but unfortunately, this insidious disease does not know the meaning of recession. It is not slowing down, it is not "cutting-back", so we as a society need to continue our vigilance in combatting it--crushing it, if you will.

And mark your calendar! On Friday, July 31st, Oceanside's only brewery, Oceanside Ale Works, is hosting a fundrainser in support of this amazing cause. They have the best beer this side of the pond and I'll be bartending, which should be quite comical. All tips will go towards my fundraising goal, so come out and help crush cancer one TIP at a time.
