Hi everybody!
Many of you are wondering how Kilian is doing, and the answer is GREAT! Lately he has been running around all day long, climbing, jumping and not being able to stand or sit still for two seconds!
Some of you might have read on Facebook that a little while ago he wasn't feeling that well. He started feeling ill about three months ago, he was very moody and then kept on throwing up regularly for over a month. He was cranky and extremely tired, and it took us a while to find out what was wrong with him. After many blood tests and lab work done his doctors figured out that one of Kilian’s medication caused liver toxicity, leading to all these side effects.
This is another reason why LLS is so important to me. Yes, research has achieved a lot over the last few decades and cure rates have increased immensely. But there is still a lot of work to do. LLS strives to find better treatments for cancer patients that are less toxic and develop new targeted therapies that are safer for the patient. I can tell you, it makes you feel like the worst parent in the world if you sign the piece of paper allowing the doctors to save your child’s life but you are fully aware that you allow them to poison your child at the same time, possibly leading to serious side effects, long and short term. Fatigue, Nausea, increased risk of infection, increased risk of additional cancer later in life, Mucucitis, loss of IQ points, just to name a few.
Kilian is still in therapy for more than a year and we are hoping that we will be able to avoid any more complications. And that he will be lucky enought to avoid long-term side effects.
I am swimming, cycling and running to find a CURE for cancer. But the last couple of months also showed me that the way towards a cure is essential as well. Please help me make a difference in patients' lives. No parents should be forced to "poison" their child in order to save his life. No patient should have to take medicine that he knows will do serious damage to his body while killing the cells responsible for cancer. And until there is a CURE, better treatments for cancer patients can make all the difference!
Here I go again!! And to answer your question: YES, I MUST BE CRAZY!!! I can't explain it myself, but since I started with Team in Training I feel like nothing is impossible anymore. So this time, I will swim 1.2 miles, cycle 56 miles and run 13.1 miles at the Kerrville Triathlon Festival on September 30, 2012. And all to help cure cancer!!!!! Doing an Half Ironman is the least I can do to support my wonderful son Kilian on his journey to beat cancer.
Leukemia is still the #1 killer of children in the US. This needs to change! No child should endure what Kilian had to go through - and is still going through. Even though he is doing amazingly well, we still have our ups and downs. Monthly hospital visits are marked on our calendar and he takes his meds like a champion. But no three-year old should me familiar with words like Prednisone and Methotrexate or know exactly how to access a port!!
So please help me prevent this happening to anyone else. Help me find a cure for cancer!
Are you going to help me??? I need your support, both emotionally and in order to reach my fundraising goal.Just know that all your help is greatly appreciated!!
So here it goes. Let the adventure begin :)
Teams are made up of individuals. Without them, there is no team.
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
I have a mission-to help find cures and more effective treatments for blood cancers. To accomplish that mission, I’m participating in a sports endurance event as a member of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training. Like the other members of TNT, I will be raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. I’m improving the quality of my life by participating and with your support, I can help improve the quality of life for patients and their families as well.
Please make a donation in support of my efforts with Team In Training and help advance the research for cures.
