Every 4 minutes one person is diagnosed with a blood cancer. On May 12th 2008 my son Christian was one of those people. At just six years old he was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML).

The experiences that followed that diagnosis are difficult to describe. As devastating as this time was for our family we were still one of the lucky ones. Radical advances had been made in the treatment of CML. A targeted drug therapy called Imantanib had dramatically improved Christian’s chances of survival.

Today Christian is eight years old and happy. If this diagnosis had come just a few years earlier this would likely be a very different story. Research funded by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society made this treatment possible.

There is still much work to be done. Imantanib is a management treatment and not a cure for CML. Treatments for other forms of Leukemia have not progressed as rapidly. Other families in this fight do not have the same tools that Christian has been given.

More research is needed. To help fund this research I am “riding for the cure”. I am training for a 100 mile cycle race in June. To gain entry into this race I must raise $4,500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. One hundred miles and $4,500 – both these numbers are scary to me – but I am tired of being afraid.

I have never seriously cycled before. I am training for the race several times a week. I need your help. Please donate to the cause. Help give children like my son a fighting chance against this cruel disease.
