As you know Sharon and I like to travel. We have seen much of America, and much of the world. These experiences help us to know how fortunate we are to live and work as we do. I imagine everyone has somewhat of a bucket list. In my travel bucket are exotic locals such as the subcontinent of India or the continent of Africa. But, I am destined not to set foot in these places. My medical team has deemed them off limits for me, as although I am in remission, my immune system is too fragile to risk these places.
Just as I am pining for an African adventure, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has begun a program called “Climb 2Cure.” Where you might ask? You guessed it – to Mount Everest base camp, or to Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. As one crazy guy who has run my share of marathons this should fit right in to my desires of challenges and raising funds for LLS. Alas, I cannot go.
Recall, I said that I do believe in a bit of predetermined destiny. So it should surprise no one that recently I received a gift – as there is a group of four fellows from Sacramento who have signed up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this coming August, raising funds for LLS in my honor. Knowing that I cannot travel to Africa, they have agreed to metaphorically take my heart and soul along with them on their journey. In this way, I am going to plant my feet in Africa. And you can help.
Yes, here it comes, my “ask,” as I want to ask your support of this effort. Mount Kilimanjaro is 19,341 feet high. So our fundraising goal will of course be related to this number, as four brave hearts will be climbing to the top for me and for Sharon. The math works out to $116,046. That will be our goal.
Toward that goal, I have obtained a $100,000 matching donation to be used specifically for LLS guided research into new treatments for CLL. We must keep new research in the pipeline. Although I am doing well now, and my father is taking some of the same medications that I am taking, should relapses occur for us, or any others in similar situations, we must pay it forward.
With your help, we can be successful, not only in scaling new heights but with this matching donation, and our goal, your donation will essentially be matched 1:1, and DrLarry’s team effort can set a new record for funds raised for our events.
Please consider a donation. As the holiday season is approaching, we wish you well, sending good cheer, positive energy, and hope for a peaceful and joyous season.
Sincerely,
Larry and Sharon
