Running & Racing To Save Lives

My Personal Honoree Robby Rogers
Aug 02, 2011 by Elisha Mattioda

So my last post touched base about Robby Rogers and his 5K event his teammates put together for him at Solano Community College. After contacting his coach and friend Trevor we got a TNT booth there. Also I contacted Robby and we messaged back and forth a couple times and he is now officially my Honoree.

So July 30th we ran in honor of him along with Olivias honoree and did our long run. Some participants shortened their run so they could participate in the 5K and some stayed to finish their long run with TNT but went out to support the runners for the event cheering them in. Also a few had participated in the raffle, bought food and shirts along with the hundreds of other people.

Team In Training with Robby & his girlfriend Rebecca at the event.

Robby, Rebecca and his family are just such amazing people. His father is such a sweetheart. we spoke for a few minutes. I tried so hard to not cry at this event and trying to keep it together. (Robby if you read this you can ask anyone I was shy and nervous about meeting you for fear i was going to break down in front of you and your family!) They are all so amazing. Rebecca is a doll. She told me how she works, goes to school and just makes sure to be there for him whenever she can be. The love these people have, the support...its just so strong. Everyone is like a huge team! The coach and baseball team rock for putting this together to help the family out. This was a great event. A great time. And I just hope everything goes smoothly from here.

Thank you Robby for letting me run for you! I am truly honored!

Robby Rogers Run
Jul 19, 2011 by Elisha Mattioda

Recently my mentee Sam came across a local 5K run. She posted it as a comment on another participant Jen's facebook and tagged me in it also. I of course actually puled over when I started to read about the event. I broke down in tears. This is the exact post from the event:

As a two-year contributor to the Solano College baseball team, Robby Rogers had the same dream as any other junior college athlete; to move on to the four-year university level, athletically and academically. Robby was close to realizing that dream after speaking to the coaches from schools such as New Mexico State and Oklahoma Baptist University regarding transfer admission for this fall.

Unfortunately, in late June, Robby was ...diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.). This form of leukemia is extremely aggressive and as such requires aggressive doses of chemotherapy, blood transfusions, spinal taps, etc. Clearly a heavy, and extremely unanticipated financial burden has been placed on Robby and his family.

After speaking with members of the Solano baseball team, training staff, and members of other sports teams, we have decided to attempt to assist the Rogers family. It is our goal, as members of the Solano College Athletics Community, to raise money for Robby and his family to help them through this tough financial time. We will be hosting a 5K run/walk for Robby and his family at Solano Community College on Saturday July 30th, 2011. For the event, registration/check-in will begin at 9 a.m. with the race beginning at 10 a.m.

It is our goal to have runners from throughout the Bay Area to come show their support for Robby by completing a 5K run/walk. The day of the run we will be seeking a donation of $25 from each runner. We hope that those running will also have financial commitments and sponsorship from family and friends so we can provide the Rogers family with as much financial assistance as we can. Runners with a sponsor sheet can use those donations as their donation to enter the race.

Additionally, we are seeking water and food donations for during and after the run, as well as prize packages for the top runners.

If you have any questions or desire to provide a donation of any type or amount please feel free to contact us on the wall or:

By email at: RobbyRogersRun@gmail.com

Through our website: http://robbyrogersrun.webs.com/

or by phone, with Coach Stover at (707) 863-7822

Please make checks payable to: Solano College Baseball with Robby Rogers Run on the memo line.

Your checks can be brought the day of the run or sent to:

Solano College Baseball – 4000 Suisun Valley Road –Fairfield, CA – 94534

(Invoice/Receipts with tax deductable ID# will be distributed to all received checks or donations).

Through our website, linked above, there is an important documents tab where individuals can find a sponsors sheet, which we hope runners will use to document sponsors to donate to our cause as well. We strongly encourage runners to use this sponsor sheet. Additionally, the important documents section also has a flyer to promote the run that can be printed off and taken to youth groups, churches, stores, businesses and anywhere else where flyers can be posted to promote the run. Please try to print off some flyers to help spread the word!

I grew up in a baseball environment with my brothers. My "older" brother is recently off to college at a local community college hoping to one day go to a four year college and play pro someday. I do not know what I would do if this ever happened to my brother, BUT i know I am raising money for the right thing. Because here is this amazing guy, whos life was put on hold due to A.L.L.(Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia), another blood cancer. So instead of sitting on the side line I want to do something. I want to take action and help him and his family! PLEASE if you are reading this come to this event! Take the time to join us on July 30th from 9am-3pm (even if you cant run or walk the 5k) come out and support Robby, his family and friends and coaches and be there for him. Any small donation will help!

Help me by helping Robby!

Thank you!

Running & Racing To Save Lives
Apr 29, 2011

Thank you so much for taking the time to come to my donation page. As many of you may or may not know I decided to take my passion of running and putting it to good use. This past Spring season I ran with Team In Training to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I raised over $2,400 and once again I have a goal of $2,340 and I plan on reaching it with all of you help! Please help me by donating to my fundraiser, and if you can't then please do me another favor and pass this link on to your friends to help me out. In fact if you can donate, pass this on anyways. because every penny helps.

On January 11th 2011 I registered for Team in Training to get fit, back in shape and run a half marathon. I was excited and giddy and posted my fundraising link right away on my facebook page. Not minutes later my childhood friend Tim posted that he found out he had stage 3B Hodgkens Lymphoma. Everything right then and there stopped. I called his girlfriend right away hoping it wasnt true but was informed it was indeed reality. I started to break down in tears but realized what I had signed up for. What I was doing was a way to improve research, to find a cure, to raise money to save Tims life and so many others lives by running. Currently Tim has one more chemo apt, before he will be cancer free! I also learned that my uncle Bill has Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) from my fundraising from last season, which has brought me closer to him and my aunt again, since I haven't been in contact for a while.

So with that said...Im asking for as much help! Please come back and look for fundraising updates, which i normally post with event flyers, dates and everything else.

I'm running for a cure!

Thank you so much for your time.

Elisha

ps: Here is an idea of where your dollars go:

$1,000 supports one week’s salary for a medical researcher at UCSF, Stanford, or Berkeley who may discover key information to developing curative treatments for blood cancers.

$500 allows 10 patients to log on to a web cast and hear the latest information in treatment for their disease.

$500 is the cost of a CT scan

$200 provides a Family Support Group Program for one year for a patient and their family.

$150 allows 5 patients to make a First Connection with a trained peer volunteer.

$150 per year is provided to a blood cancer patient in need of financial assistance.

$100 provides 3 patients access to an information teleconference.

$75 is the average cost of tissue typing to become a bone marrow donor.

$40 is the cost of sending a comprehensive packet of information for children with cancer.

$35 pays for transportation expenses for a patient living in Northern California’s most rural areas to treatment at a comprehensive cancer center.

$25 covers a single prescription co-payment.

$5 is the cost of sending a newly diagnosed patient information about support and their disease.
