My Fundraising Page

Feb 04, 2014

I've completed 9 half marathons (Three with Team in Training) and quite a few 10Ks but I haven't done any event on a bicycle. My husband has completed several metric century rides (66 Miles) and a single full century ride (100 Miles) in Las Vegas, but here is something we are doing together. He's training on his own and I'm doing it trough Team in Training.

After this Century Ride, my next adventure with Team in Training will be a Triathlon which would be the last event in my "Triple Crown."

My goal this season is to raise $2,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as they advance their mission to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and Hodgkin’s disease while also improving the quality of life for blood cancer patients and their families. Will you support my efforts?

Wondering what your donation will do?

  • Encourage scientists to pursue blood cancer research. Grants to young scientists help grow research talent even as federal research funding becomes increasingly limited.
  • Develop "targeted therapies" that kill cancer cells selectively. By hitting specific molecular targets, these treatments don't harm patients' healthy cells, resulting in fewer dangerous side effects.
  • Test immunotherapies. Immunotherapies strengthen a patient's own immune system so it can better fight infections and attack cancer cells, reducing the need for damaging chemotherapy.
  • Improve the safety of today's cures. LLS funds research to predict, manage and prevent complications in patients most at risk for long-term and late effects of treatment.
  • Help patients and their families make informed decisions. LLS supplies information and counseling to help guide patients through their cancer journey and access current treatment and clinical trial options.
  • Provide financial aid and co-pay assistance. A cancer diagnosis is hard enough without having to deal with its financial burden. We provide programs to help relieve the economic strain of a blood cancer diagnosis.
  • Offer community services. Among the wide array of programs LLS provides are those that link newly diagnosed patients with trained volunteers and that help young cancer patients return to school after an absence resulting from treatment.
  • Encourage our state and federal legislators to support blood cancer issues. With your help, LLS brings to the attention of lawmakers the urgent need for increased government funding and support of research and patient access to affordable treatment and quality care.

Or simply consider a gift of $100 - $1 for every mile that I will ride on June 14, 2014!

No gift is too small. Your generosity means the world to me and to blood cancer patients worldwide!

Thank you, in advance, for your continued support!

Relentless for a CURE,

Angela

I'm so excited about 2014 and my new cycling adventure scheduled on June 14th.

Don't get me wrong, my first love (besides my son, husband and family) is running, but I have added cycling to my interests and have signed up with Team in Training to complete my first century ride in Denver.

I'll be training and completing this race with my husband and one of my newest friends, Lora Ann (LA) and her husband Craig. LA and I met while I was training for the Denver Marathon in October, but I injured my hip and was unable to compete. We have started running together this winter, since neither of us can give up the running bug, and wanted to train for a cycling event together.

Our husbands will not be training through TNT, but they will be supporting us emotionally and hopefully willing to massage out any charlie horses we may have during training.

Since my injury and inability to train with TNT in 2013, my fundraising dollars have been transfered to this event, so I'm already 83% to my fundraising goal. That still leaves $200+ that I want to raise to help this wonderful organization and support it's mission to cure blood cancer.

Please feel free to e-mail me at momtosamco@outlook.com with any questions and words of encouragement.

Not only did I have an overuse injury, I ended up getting bursitis in my right hip that sidelined me for the entire running season and squashed my dreams of running my first marathon. There was also some strain to my piriformis muscle on my right side.

After several months of physical therapy, I began to move better. I was told that I still neede to wait to run, but I could bike. Of course, I couldn't just buy a casual bike, I need to get a decent road bike. I bought a Terry Tailwind, shoes, clips and a bunch of other accessories and started riding.

Within the first few weeks, I was riding 30-40 mile group rides in the Boulder area around 12-14 MPH. I know now why my husband got hooked with cycling and has completed 2 metric and one full century (Las Vegas) rides.

Due to my injury I was able to transfer my fundraising dollars to a new event. We are going to ride the 2014 American's Most Beautiful Bike Ride together (me through TNT).

The longest distance I've ridden is 54 miles without a lot of uphill, but I know that TNT will train me effectively for this event.

I can't wait to meet my new teammates at Kickoff in February and start raising more money to cure blood cancer.

During my training, I have tried to incorporate several half marathons to keep up my mileage. On June 22nd, I ran the Slacker Half Marathon, which is mostly downhill. One of the problems that can occur is a strain of the gluteus medius muscle. I felt like there was a knive in my glute. I was able to work that out through stretching, but know I have a knot in my right quadricep.

It's pretty painful in the mornings, but I can work most of it out, so that I can walk without limping. Unfortunately, my running has now come to a standstill so that I don't aggravate it further. I have used a foam roller to work it out and have gone to massage and yoga.

I really hope that it stops hurting. I need to get back to my training, FAST!

Teams are made up of individuals. Without them, there is no team.

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I have a mission-to help find cures and more effective treatments for blood cancers. To accomplish that mission, I going to run The Rock 'N' Roll Denver Marathon (my first full marathon and fourth) as a member of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training.

Like the other members of TNT, I will be raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. I’m improving the quality of my life by participating and with your support, I can help improve the quality of life for patients and their families as well.

I'm so committed to this organization that, for a few months, I volunteering while I searched for a full-time marketing position.

Please make a donation in support of my efforts with Team In Training and help advance the research for cures.
