Race for the Cure

Race for the Cure
Feb 08, 2010 by David Pride

Here's how this works:

My name is David Pride. I am a student of Mechancial Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines and I am training for the 2010 Steamboat Springs Marathon. To do this I've partnered with Team in Training. They provide me with professional coaches, training, encouragement, and this web page -- everything I need for this achievement. Most importantly, they give me a cause to work for.

To participate in the Team in Training program, I must raise a minimum of $2100 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The society uses 72.9% of the money you donate for its cause, funding cancer treatment research and patient outreach programs. The rest goes to management costs and bringing fundraising and awareness programs like Team In Training to fruition. Your donation would support these programs that help thousands of people afflicted with blood cancers. This includes our Team Heroes: Kelli Hernandez, who has Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and Brittany Ross, with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, which is in remission.

The simplest way to help out is to use the panel on the right to donate. Even the smallest donation counts.

With every donation we get a step closer to the cure.

Month at a glance: April

Sorry about the lack of updates, but school has kept me incredibly busy. On top of school I've been sick! That, however, is now history. The Alpha Phi Omega poker tournament was loads of fun, and we raised just about $130! I haven't been running as much as I'd like to, but when the doctor tells you to take a break, its usually best if you listen to them. This last saturday(4/24) we ran the Platte River trail again, and I managed to run more than I ever had before! So despite all of the distractions trying to get in my way, I am still seeing improvement! I can't wait to run some more! I'd like to give a shout-out to one of the contributors to the poker tournament, who is in remission from Leukemia, however, she would like to remain anonymous.

Week at a Glance: 3/21-3/27

This morning I get up to go to practice, walk out to my car, and find that my battery has been completely drained. I must have left the lights on or something, so I didn't get to make it to the recommitment breakfast, or practice this morning. I did run, And I'm feeling good though. This week is the week of the charity poker tournament set up by my fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. All Proceeds will go to LLS, it should be fun, and I'm anxiously looking forward to it!

Week at a Glance: 3/14-3/20

Spring break! Not a lot occurred, spent more time off my feet than I'd have liked, but we'll be back up to full speed next week!

Week at a Glance: 3/7-3/13

This week we ran for 2 hours along the Platte River Trail. This week, from the training point of view, it was relatively standard. I made some friends, ran farther than Iever have before, and had loads of fun. From the fundraising perspective, I thought it was a pretty good week, despite not raising and specific funds, I did manage to set up all the paperwork necessary for my Fraternity's charity poker tournament, which will be going to LLS through here. I look forward to our track practice this wednesday.

Week at a Glance: 2/28-3/6

Running with someone has made my weekly runs so much easier, mostly because it breaks up the monotony, but also because having someone holding you accountable makes it so much harder to back out.

I also introduced our cause to my fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, which is a service fraternity. My pledge class will be helping me raise some money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through a fundraising poker tournament! It should be tons of fun.

Week at a Glance: 2/21-2/27

This week we ran the trails stemming from the Goodson Recreation Center. I did much better than expected because I had spent the majority of the week healing up from some pulled muscles to prevent further injury. Also, I managed to pull out the Go Getter Grant: which includes going to kickoff, having a 1:1 fundraising consulation, raising >$250 online and sending off 100 letters. By doing most of these, I got $150 credited to my account, putting me that much closer to my goal. I also managed to find myself a running buddy to join me on my weekly runs, which should make them much more enjoyable.

Week at a Glance: 2/14-2/20

Today(2/20) we ran the Platte River Trail, despite the fact that it was snowing, and 30 degrees outside. If that isn't dedication I don't know what is. We also had a stretching and injury prevention clinic, which was very informative.

Personally, I did better than I expected. It is interesting that despite the fact that we're only two weeks in I'm already noticing improvement. I look forward to future training sessions.

During my two of my runs earlier in the week I ran along the Clear Creek path, a new route for me. Its more crowded and hilly than my normal route, but its still a nice trail, I intend to add it to my usual repertoire.

Week at a Glance: 2/6-2/13

We started out this week with Kickoff. We got together to meet our mentors, coaches, and team-mates. We also got our binders, filled with resources for fundraising and training.

Then, Tuesday, we had a shoe clinic at Runners Roost. I ended getting myself some new Asics running shoes and a few miscellaneous items.

Today(2/13) we ran a timed 5k to find our pace group. Although I did not do as well as I was hoping, but the accomplishment itself was nice.
