I am running the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco with Team in Training on October 14, 2012, and I am so excited!
Wait a minute...
Didn't I once say I would never run a full marathon? (yes)
Didn't I also say that training for an endurance event and raising money at the same time (while working full time and raising a family) was one of the hardest things I have ever done, and wasn't sure if I could EVER do it again? (yes)
Didn't I once say that I was so over committed that I probably needed an intervention? (yes)
And didn't my family threaten to disown me last time? (also, yes)
Okay, don't tell anyone, but I am doing it again.
Why, you may ask?
I am doing this because every four minutes, someone new is diagnosed with a blood cancer, and every 10 minutes, someone else loses their battle with leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma. I am doing this because leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children under the age of 20. I am doing this for my friends Kim and Rick, who are both in remission, but also for others, like Ken, Kyle, and Jen, who have unfortunately lost their brave fight with blood cancers. I am doing this because every dollar raised gets us one step closer to a cure for blood cancers. And finally, because a cure for blood cancer could mean a cure for ALL CANCER.
Just to put this in perspective, I am not a fast runner (I am a solid medium speed), so it will probably take me about 5 hours to run 26.2 miles. In this time, 75 people will have been newly diagnosed with a blood cancer, and 30 people will have lost their fight. That fact alone is enough to get me off the couch.
I am also doing this because, a full marathon is on my "bucket list" and I am turning 40 this year. There is no time like the present, right?
And finally, The Nike Women's Marathon is run in San Francisco, and there is no big medal on a ribbon at the end. No, my friends, the bling for this event is a necklace, specially designed by Tiffany and Co. and given to me by a handsome guy in a tuxedo. So if I was going to run the full 26.2 anyway, I might as well get a little something for my jewelry box (and some eye candy, too).
But… I can’t do it without your help. Please consider making a donation to help me reach my goal. You can donate in two ways.

By participating in this event with Team in Training, I will train with a coach whose job is to make sure I finish the run strong and healthy. I also will have the support of the staff at the local LLS office; they will take care of my travel arrangements such as transportation, lodging, and event registration. All I have to do is show up, put on my shoes, and raise a few dollars for a GREAT CAUSE! Who's with me?
I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress.
Thanks for your support!
