Most of you know this is far from my first event for Team in Training in my quest to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in my niece's honor. What you may not know, recently I was told my Aunt Margie has been battling a blood cancer as well: lymphoma. Not that I like adding names to my list, this year I am also adding a third honored hero: my best friend's Uncle Jim. Although he is not battling a blood cancer, to me cancer is cancer and they all need a cure! Now when I swim/bike/run, I have three honored heroes in my heart, and on my mind.
So, what is my goal now? I have decided to TRI again: I am taking one more shot at Nation’s Triathlon. That's right... not just running... this event will push the limits of my endurance much like the blood cancers and chemo have pushed the limits of my heroes’ endurance.
Last year I participated in Nation’s Triathlon as my first attempt at an Olympic Length Triathlon: 1500 meter swim, 40k bike, and 10k run (translated roughly into 1 miles swim, 25 mile bike, and 6.2 mile run). You can read my story of last year's event on my blog. In the end I was successful in completing the course. My time: 3:44:28. Just seconds shy of my drop dead longest time I would allow myself. This year my goal is 3:15 or better. I have greatly improved my bike speed and my running has been much more consistent. The swim is my challenge! But with Courtney, Margie, and Jim on my side, how can I possibly go wrong?
What makes this year’s event even more special is the date: The 2011 Nation's Triathlon will take place on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in the Nation’s Capital of Washington, D.C. Like last year, the course features a swim in the Potomac under the Arlington Bridge, a bike route through the beautiful areas around Rock Creek Parkway, and a run that will travel through Washington, DC’s monument corridor in the shadow of the nation’s best known memorials and national treasures.
Not only will my fundraising efforts support this great cause, but the proceeds of the overall event will as well, as this event is benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of my niece, my aunt, my uncle, and all individuals who are battling cancers. These people are the REAL HEROES on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - A CURE!
Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission.
