Racing to Save Lives
Post Race Blog:
I first want to start off by thanking all of you who were able to donate to help fight blood cancers. Together we raised $3,600 for the LLS family and there are still some donations yet to come in.
So your wondering how did I do? I would say this, the weather failed us miserably but the results did not. Temperature for the 1/2 Marathon was about 37 degrees and sleet. The high temp for the full marathon was 31 degrees, and the start was thought to be around 26. With that said the race couldn't have gone any better. Saturday I ran with Heidi for the first time in a race and despite the fact she was under the weather we completed it in 2hrs 15 minutes.
Sunday was the big day, how would the body react to having just run a 1/2 marathon the day before and how would it handle the sub-freezing temperatures? I started the race towards the front of the pack of 17,000 runners and yet it seemed like there were always thousands of people ahead of me. I completed the first 1/2 marathon one second behind my goal pace of 1 hr 50 minutes. My goal was to try and pull a negative split. The second part of the race couldn't have gone any better, with each mile I began to feel stronger as the race progressed. My fastest 6 miles all came in the final 10K and I managed a negative split by 4 minutes and set a new personal best 3:35:40.
Thank you to all that supported me during the trainings and by donating. I can't tell you how much this society means to Heidi and I and how much we appreciate you helping LLS fight cancer.
Go Team,
Darrell
