Check geoffberunnin.wordpress.com for updates on my training!!
HAVE YOUR DONATION DOUBLED!!
That's right, from July 1 until the end of August all donations will be matched by a corporate sponsor. I've started off by making a donation myself so please join me and help me fight these horrible blood cancers!!
From Couch to Marathon...
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
Please visit geoffberunnin.wordpress.com to get regular updates, pictures, and information on my training from now until the marathon!
So here's the deal. I'm training to participate in the San Antonio Marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. As part of this grand undertaking I'm raising money to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I'm running in memory of my Uncle Randy who fought hard, but was ultimately taken by this terrible disease. I'm running in memory of all those, like my Uncle Randy, who fought hard. I'm running in honor of those currently fighting these diseases who need our help to survive.
Here's the bad news...
- There is no known cure (yet).
- Leukemia remains a leading cause of cancer related death in children.
- Leukemia and lymphoma are the leading fatal cancers in young men under 35.
- Every four minutes, someone is newly diagnosed with a blood cancer.
- Every ten minutes, another child or adult is expected to die from a blood-related cancer.
But there is good news!
- In 1960, the five-year survival rate for children with the most common form of leukemia was just 4%. Today, it is 85%!
- A newly FDA approved drug, Gleevec, has been shown to normalize blood counts in nearly all patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). As a result of the success of Gleevec, in 2007, the relative five-year survival rate for CML patients is now at 74.8%!
I have a problem though. I cannot do this alone! I need your help. Most importantly the people fighting these diseases need your help. I have the ability to run, and with that gift, I will be running to help everyone who is fighting. You have the opportunity to help these men, women, and children. I need your help to reach my goal of raising $4,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I know it can be done, but it will "take a village." So please, help me find a cure for every mother and father, every son and daughter, and every uncle and niece who have been touched by these diseases.
You can contribute by mailing a check payable to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society back to me or by making a donation right here on this website. Your contribution is 100% tax deductible and a minimum of 75% of every dollar raised goes to support the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
In addition, if you or a loved one has fought or is currently fighting ANY type of cancer, let me know and I will run in honor of them by placing their name on my jersey for race day! Let's show the world how many people this affects and that we are standing up to fight it!
On behalf of myself and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the lives they touch, THANK YOU!
Now let's get tough and beat this!
Sincerely,
Geoffrey Long
