Racing to Save Lives

This page is about Courage.

It takes courage to complete a marathon. It takes courage to even train for one, when I've never been much of an athlete. It takes courage to commit to raising $5000 to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives.

But nothing compares to the courage it takes to face those diagnoses. I'm going to summon the courage to train, walk and fundraise in honor of those brave individuals battling blood cancer, including my Honored Teammates:

  • New Personal Honoree: Arlene Sierdsma, my husband's aunt who he never met because she died of childhood leukemia.
  • Personal Honoree: My coworker's father, Gus, who has CLL and is not doing very well right now.
  • Cory Mead, father of five. He was diagnosed in 2006 with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is now in remission and the youngest member of his family is a miracle baby born July 2008 -- just two months older than Charlotte.
  • Little Alexander, just 4.5 years old, diagnosed with Pre B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Fall 2008 and now in his maintenance phase of treatment. His mama is training for the race right along with me and has already raised $22,000! What an inspiration! You can read an article about them in the Dana Point Times
  • Ramon Nava, who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on Christmas morning after being taken to the ER with a high fever that would no't break. He took his first breath in heaven the next day.

These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

Can you be brave with me? Please be generous and make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission.

[If you are uncomfortable making a donation online, you can mail a check directly to me payable to "The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society" or "LLS". Our home address is 1345 Cabrillo Park Drive, Apartment A15, Santa Ana, CA 92701.]

I hope you will visit this web site and my blog often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!

UPDATES:

1. I've decided that I'm training to walk the half-marathon. 13.1 miles is still a big accomplishment!

2. As of August 15, I've covered 140 miles in my training!
