MONICA'S BIG ADVENTURE

Hello everyone and welcome to my Team In Training home page! I am so HAPPY that you took time out of your day to learn more out my RACE TO SAVE LIVES.

On September 27th I will participate in the Westchester Triathlon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. I am SUPER EXCITED to compete in this endurance event which will include a.9 mile swim, a 26 mile cycling portion and a 6.5 mile run. It will be A LOT of hard work, but with your help and support I know I will SUCCEED.

When I first decided to participate in this event, I did it to get back in shape. After listening to and speaking with a former cancer survivor, I realized that this event is much bigger than me and my personal workout goals. It's about SAVING LIVES and helping hospitals get the resources and research necessary to fight against cancer. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission. Remember no amount is too small because every little bit counts.

What $1 Can Do...

Why your fundraising dollars are so important:

-A donation of $25 provides patients and their loved ones with FREE booklets that contain up-to-date information on their disease and help them make informed decisions about their treatment options.

-A donation of $50 makes possible a Family Support group with a trained facilitator where comfort can be found and experiences can be shared among patients and family members.

-A donation of $100 helps supply laboratory researchers with supplies and materials critical to carrying out their search for cures.

-A donation of $1,000 makes possible one- on-one conversations with health care specialists who provide patients with information about their disease, treatment options, and helps prepare them with questions for their health care team.

I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!

WEEK 1

Yesterday, May 6th, I was able to meet my fellow teammates and the coaches who I will train with for the next 5 months. Honestly, I am a little nervous about all that is to come, but I'm ready for the challenge and I can't wait for the first group training session. WISH ME LUCK!

WEEK 2

Ok so yesterday, May 13th was my first GTS (Group Training Session). The group basically ran 15 mins into Central Park (which seemed like an eternity) and 15 mins back out of Central Park. You'll all be happy to know I ran the entire 30 mins! WOO HOO! lol Let me just tell you that running for 30 mins on a treadmill is COMPLETELY different than running 30 mins outdoors on paths of concrete, gravel, and inclines. The second GPS will be this Saturday at 9AM. That's right people! I am devoting my sleep in/relax day to training for this thing so STAY TUNED...

WEEk 3

I made it on time to my Saturday workout in Central Park. For those of you who live in New York, you arleady know that it rained really hard for a good 15 minutes. Yes...I still completed training in the rain! Now I can never say the weather is too bad to workout lol.

On Wednesday, May 30th I had my second run GTS. This training was filled with running/squat drills. Basically you run every 4 mins and then do as many squats as you possibly do for 1 min. Can you feel the burn people?!! Well let me tall ya...I did lol. I can say that my body is getting used to the work out and my recovery time is becoming less and less. More updates to come ...

WEEKS 4 & 5

Week 4 was pretty much the same as week 3. Week 5 has just begun!

June 2nd is the first SWIM GTS. That's right people... Monica will swim! I hope I do better than I expect. Although I can keep myself afloat in the waters, I am by no means a swimmer. Maybe TNT can work miracles. Saturday will be the first bike GTS, which means I need to hurry up and get a bike lol. I will update you next week on how good (or how bad) I did. Either way I am going to stick with it!

WEEKS 6 & 7

As you know by now, I have started the swim portion of my training and it is clear to me that I've learned 2 things...1) chlorine does not taste good and 2) I need to work on my breathing. I actually like swimming more than the run portion of the training. In fact, I think running is now my least favorite thing to do in the world! lol On the upside of things, guess what?? MONICA NOW HAS HER VERY OWN ROAD BIKE!! Yes people! After much searching, analyzing, and comparing, I have finally found a road bike that is affordable and efficient! It's cute too lol (you know I'm still a girly girl). Anywho, this weekend will be the first time I train with it so I'm SUPER EXCITED. I still have to get a dorky helmet (safety first), which I will have before Saturday. I can't wait to update you guys on how it all goes! STAY TUNED :-)

WEEKS 7-9

I know it's been a while since I have updated but I definitely wanted to keep you guys posted. Training is getting really INTENSE! I have officially started training 5-6 days a week for at least an hour or more each session. The biking was a little discouraging at first, but now that I am becoming a master at switching gears, I am starting to get excited! Gear shifting is CRUCIAL when riding and definitely helps to ease the intensity of the ride if you do it correctly. During these weeks , we have had our first two BRICK trainings. Huh...whats a BRICK training you ask??? Well this is when you ride your bike for an hour (hills included) and then proceed to run for at least 30 mins after your legs feel like they are about to fall off! lol I am happy to say that I did NOT pass out lol. I am making major improvements in the RUN training! I'm not winded during the run and my recovery takes less time. I am finding that eating the right nutrients before and after the training DEFINITELY makes a difference in my stamina. Now the swimming is another story... I will keep you updating on my progress but for now, I think mastering that will be my hardest task. Check back soon!

WEEK 10

THIS JUST IN...EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT....Monica has finally got the swim stroke down! YES people! That's right! I finally got the swim stroke down this week. I thought I had it before but I was sadly mistaken. This week I had a break through! Now once, I get the breathing down...I think I will be set! Although this was a tremendous feat for me, it is not the only thing that I accomplished this week. This week I finally ran my first 6.5 miles! WAIT...did you hear me???!!! I said I FINALLY RAN MY FIRST 6.5 MILES!!! WOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!! This Saturday's bike GTS went for an hour and 30 minutes. We went up and down the harlem hill a total of 6 times! For those of you who are not familar with Central Park...Harlem hill is SUPER STEEP. There was a time where I thought this kind of physically challenging activity would not be possible for me to do. I think I am on my way folks! I think I am on my way folks! Keep the support going and keep checking in. ...only 10 more weeks to go til race day!

REMAINING WEEKS COUNTDOWN

Hi Everyone! Okay so I know that I haven't updated in a while but I wanted to keep you abreast of my progress. I officially have 3 weeks left until race day!! Whew! How time flys! Here are some significant things that have happened in the past few weeks...

  • First open water swim at Coney Island : Well, I panicked on this training. The whole green murky water thing didn't sit too well with me and I turned into a scattered swimming mess! lol The good news is that I still have time to practice in open water and make it count.
  • Timed 1-mile practice swim: This was a good day! It definitely gave me the confidence I needed. I had the stamina to complete the run. I was relaxed and consistent! Unforunately session time ran out and I had one more lap to go to complete the mile. My time was at 48 minutes! Let me point out that there was a time when I could not complete a full lap without stopping! lol
  • I'm completing the 6 mile runs with energy to spare. This is MAJOR for me. Now its time to work on my speed.

Ok so next week I plan on biking the actual race course. I will let you know how it goes. Race day is just around the corner! Stay tuned for the progress update. Thanks to all who have supported thus far. It means SO much to me!

FINAL COUNTDOWN TO RACE DAY!

It is September 24th... the day before the best day on earth (MY BIRTHDAY wooo hoooo) lol! However, more importantly, race day is on SUNDAY people! I never thought that this day would come so soon. It seems like just yesterday I started telling people that I, Monica Gonzalez, was going to run a triathlon and received stares of disbelief. Well the event is just days away and I feel as prepared as I'll ever be. I didn't get a chance to preview the bike course l, but I hear that its hilly! (YIKES) All the training I've done has physically prepared me for this moment so the only thing left is to prepare myself mentally. To do that...I have started to create my "amped up" playlist. These are songs that I will listen to from now until race day, that will motivate me to keep going through my pain of my run after I've swam almost a mile and biked for 25 miles! If you don't know by now Ipods/headphones are not allowed during the race so these songs will have to resound in my head. I am confident that it will work. WISH ME LUCK!

I can not express how grateful I am for all of my friends and family who have helped me through this challenging time. It is truly remarkable the support I have been given from not only my friends and family, but from co-workers and even strangers that stand up and lend support to this cause. The generosity that I have seen from each and everyone of you still amazes me. My only hope is that I make you all proud on race day and that one day I can lend support for something that you feel as passionate about. I never realized how many peoples' lives are affected by blood cancers, and moreso people that I am actually in contact with every day. This definitely was an eye-opening experience for me and I know the funds we have raised together will make a difference in someone's life. THANK YOU ALL!
