The Beck Family, Sep. 2008 One evening, in October, 2008, I got a call from my dad. It was, and probably always will be, the worst call of my life. He was calling to tell me that his 4+ year battle with leukemia was winding down. He had recieved a bone marrow transplant 3 years earlier, and was in remission for 2 years, but eventually his body would not accept the new marrow. He spent all of 2008 in and out of the hospital (though mostly in) while the doctors tried every drug and treatment strategy they could think of. Even the experimental ones had not proven effective for him. So he was calling to say goodbye. Fortunately, I was able to fly home to Colorado in time to hold his hand and be with him for the last few hours. He passed away on October 10th, 2008. Undoubtedly, this experience had a huge impact on me, and everyone who was close to him. And unfortunately, it is not a rare experience. Leukemia, Lymphoma or myeloma will kill an estimated 53,240 people this year. That's one person every 10 minutes. That is why I'm training to run in the Vancouver marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. LLS has been a valuable resource for my dad and my mom. They were able to provide a wealth of information on his type of leukemia and answer many of their questions. Since it was started in 1949, LLS has invested more than $600 million on leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma research. Today, much of that funding comes from the efforts of people like me and my friends on Team in Training. All of us on Team In Training are dedicated to raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am running this event in memory of my dad, Steven R. Beck, and also in honor of all individuals who are currently battling blood cancers. Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission. My goal is to raise at least $2,000 by the end of the 2009 (goal achieved!), and another $2,000 by April 14th, 2010. The marathon will take place on May 2nd, 2010. Your donation is 100% tax deductable. And 75% goes directly to LLS's quest for a cure. For more information about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society visit them online at www.lls.org. Feel free to check back often to see my progress. Thanks for your support! Total miles run since 11/17/09: 295.2 TnT miles: 138.5 Solo miles: 156.7 |
