Dear Friends and Family -
No, you are not having deja vu. I can't believe it either, but I am running another half marathon in June to support The Leukemia Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team in Training. The location has changed to San Diego, but the cause is still the same - raise money to help develop treatments and ultimately find a cure for blood cancers.
Like last year, I am running on behalf of my University of Tennessee (Go Dawgs!) lovin friend Rob "Bun Bun" Bundy.
In 2007, Buns was diagnosed with T-Cell ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). He had only been living in New York City less than a year, but made the decision to go back to Tennessee to start treatment near his family. After a successful round of chemotherapy, we got him back up here cancer free in 2008. Unfortunately, he relapsed in 2009. At that point, he moved into Memorial Sloan-Kettering for 2 months where he continued treatment including a bone marrow transplant. Although Sloan-Kettering is the best at what they do, no one should ever have to spend time there. I am happy to report that Rob is currently cancer free and has been since 2010. He is now getting his Master's in Architecture at Yale and continues to trash talk The Dawgs. Rude.
The funds raised by Team In Training and the Leukemia Lymphoma Society make it possible for patients to get the best care at hospitals like Sloan-Kettering all around the country. The program has raised over $1.2 billion for cancer research.
LLS receives no federal funding. But through the support of Team in Training, they were able to accomplish the following in 2010:
- Invest $72 million, which includes funding for 103 new grants to researchers in academic institutions and $8 million in contracts through the LLS Therapy Acceleration Program
- Support 347 research projects in the United States, Canada and 9 other countries
- Provide financial assistance to patients
- Sponsor scientific conferences around the country
- Produce educational materials and videos
- Run dozens of Family Support Groups nationwide
I appreciate your support and look forward to breaking many world running records while single handedly curing cancer.
