Thank you for visiting my Team In Training home page.
I will be participating in the NYC triathlon in honor of my father in law, Jerry Egan.
Jerry is an amazing person. I continue to be impressed by his accomplishments, generosity, intellect and family values. I am truly proud to be an Egan.
His story as of July 3, 2012:
In February of 2010 Jerry went on a bike ride and the next day he started having pain in his thigh area. He was seen by an orthopedic and was diagnosed with a quad strain and was sent for physical therapy. After 5 weeks he called the orthopedic to say he thought it was something else as he was not having any pain relief and actually had more pain.
He had an MRI and was found to have fracture in his femur, and a large tumor. He needed surgery. They placed a thirty inch rod from his hip to knee.
The biopsy showed lymphoma and a further PET scan showed diffuse large B cell Lymphoma diagnosed in five other areas as well. He had 7 treatments of chemotherapy and 18 radiation treatments in his femur which put lymphoma into remission.
The lymphoma stayed in remission until January 2012 when the 4th routine followup PET scan showed it returned in a different area. There were 4 hot spots in the liver.
He recently had 2 aggressive sessions of chemotherapy. His PET scan showed that the cancer is in remission!!!! He received his stem cell replacement, which was very exhausting. He's now home recovering.
We were able to see him quite a few times and he looks wonderful. We are here in Rhode Island again, staying in the same house (which is a huge step), enjoying some much needed family time.
Jerry's having muscle aches and sciatica pain. Those of you that have been through sciatica pain know that it's a really awful and debilitating pain. He's endured so much lately, please have him in your thoughts to finally be comfortable.
He's on the road to recovery and has a way to go. It's been a long journey and we are so thankful to have everyone's support.
While I'm training, I often think of Jerry. I can not relate to his situation. When I attempt to understand it, I realize that I can't. I've never been through anything like this.
He continues to be in amazing spirits. He's had support from his wonderful family: his son and my husband, Sean; his daughters, Stephanie and Susan; and his wife, Alma. My heart is overwhelmed by their love and dedication. Thank God for them.
I'm honored to participate in this race on behalf of Jerry.
We love him so much and can't wait for him to be 100%!
Please make a donation in support of my efforts with Team In Training and help advance the research for cures.
Check back for frequent updates!!!
Thank you
Michele
