In the middle of April last year, our dear friend Morgan Petra Ashe, a pre-med postbac at Columbia University, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). We had seen her getting paler and more tired but through her perpetual high energy and positive attitude, the diagnosis came as an extraordinary shock to her and her family and friends.
From the first day in the hospital, Morgan was a fighter. The days of tests, biopsies, scans, and blood draws became weeks, then months. She battled through three rounds of chemotherapy in New York with virtually no effect on her extremely aggressive cancer-- but her smile and laugh never faded. A fourth round of chemo in Baltimore finally made a dent so the focus could turn to the ultimate promise of a bone marrow transplant.
Morgan and her family returned to California where she received her transplant. She fought graft vs. host disease and began to improve, always looking towards the future and her plans to continue her medical studies. Just as suddenly as it began, Morgan Petra Ashe passed away January 17, 2011 due to complications from her transplant.
We will be remembering Morgan as we train and compete this summer in the Nautica NYC Triathlon. We will honor her by also raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to help find more effective treatments and an ultimate cure for AML and other blood cancers to give more hope to those who are diagnosed in the future. Whatever amount you can donate will be greatly appreciated.
