Update 06/22/09:
4 weeks to go!!!! Here I am at Coney Island, where we did our first open water practice swim Saturday morning, not so bright, but definitely early! We followed the swim with a run along the boardwalk, then headed to Nathan's for one of their famous hotdogs. Mmmm mmmm.
Update 06/10/09:
Hello all! A light update on the triathlon. We have 7 weeks until race day, so it's getting pretty serious. Training has definitely gotten tough, but with good results. Last night at group run, we completed a 6 mile run, and tonight's group swim in Manhattan will include a steady .75 mile swim.
And on the fundraising side, we're getting there! At the halfway point, there is work still to be done. Thanks so much to all of you who have donated already! To those who would like to donate, you can scroll down to my kickoff messsage to see what Team In Training is all about. You can make a donation in any amount, it does not need to be one of the suggested amounts, directly through this secure website. For those of you who prefer to write a check, directions follow.
The address to mail to is:
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, NYC Chapter
475 Park Avenue South, 8th Floor
New York, NY 10016
You can make out and mail the check to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and indicate in a note that it is for Rebecca Black and the NYC triathlon. I'd also suggest that your name be in the memo line of the check. Once they receive it, it should also be reflected on this fundraising website. If it's not, let me know and I can contact someone at the office.
That's it for now.
Wishing everyone the best,
Rebecca
Update 04/02/09:
Hey there friends and family! So I thought I'd better give you guys a little update, so you don't think I've made this whole triathlon thing up! We are almost five weeks into training, and with 16 weeks left, I think I will need just about all of them to be ready for race day.
The day of the race, as those of you familiar with triathlons know, will start with a .9 mile swim in the Hudson River (brrrr, but we will be wearing wetsuits), followed by a 25 mile bike ride, and then ending with a 6.2 mile run. So far, I am up to about 1/4 mile swim, 7 mile bike ride, and 4 mile run, but not in succession!
The weather is finally turning spring-like here in New York, after the longest, coldest winter I have known. Of course, that may not be saying much to you Northerners out there since I grew up in Texas. Believe me though, Texas folks, it was cold! Needless to say, I am thrilled with the warmer temperatures, and plan to get out there to train in the sunshine as much as possible.
A final note of thanks to those of you who have already donated to help me reach my goal. Much appreciation! You have gotten me off to a great start! I will let you know how some of my other fundraising projects turn out. So far, one idea is to sell homemade snacky goodies at the Brooklyn Kickball League's Opening Day. Many of my young at heart friends belong to this grown up group, and their games are a sight to behold. And from what I hear, they love Rice Krispies treats and cheese puffs!
That's it for this installment. I hope all of you are well and enjoying the springtime wherever you are. And to those of you who have tried to donate and have experienced problems with the website, please keep trying.
Thanks and Love,
-Rebecca
Kickoff Message:
OK, so I don't have any photos of me on a bike, or in those funny little shorts looking exhausted, but triumphant....YET!!! However, here is a picture of me sitting in the grass in Brooklyn's beautiful Prospect Park, where I'm training to participate in the Nautica New York City Triathlon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training.
All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives.
I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers, but especially my good friend Justin Sullivan, who is training with me for the big race. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we
need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!
Times is tough, I know! But if you feel you can, please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission.
I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
-Rebecca
