Three days until 26.2!!
Oct 31, 2013 by Richard Zwelling

It's happening! This Sunday, I'll cross the Verrazano Bridge, run through Brooklyn and Queens, cross the 59th Street Bridge, make my way up First Avenue in Manhattan, cross into the Bronx, come back down Fifth Avenue, and hopefully end up in Central Park still standing after 26.2 miles and several hours.

I'm of course extremely nervous but at the same time exhilarated at the prospect of being a participant in one of the most iconic NYC events. My parents and my wife will be there to cheer me on, and my TNT teammates will be there all along the way to help pull me through.

It's been a much better training season, as I've managed to stay injury-free (*knock wood*) almost the whole way, aside from a mild case of tendonitis in my left foot that thankfully disappeared rather quickly. Lots of cardio kickboxing provided me with some much-needed cross-training to avoid excessive wear-and-tear on my knees and back.

However, I'm still working on my fundraising goal of $1,250, and that's where you can help. There's still time to donate, and all contributions are tax-deductible and help to support treatment and research for blood-related cancers. I'm running the race in honor of my maternal grandmother, Seretta, who passed away from lymphoma when I was just 14. I know she would have been there to cheer me on were she still here, and your contribution can help to ensure that other blood-cancer patients remain with us for years to come.

If you have any questions (or just want to say hi!), don't hesistate to contact me. I'd love to hear from you!

See you at the finish line...and beyond!

Another year, another attempt at completing 26.2 miles!

As many of you know, the NYC Marathon was cancelled last year due to Hurricane Sandy. Even if it hadn't been cancelled, however, I wouldn't have been able to run; I overtrained and ended up injuring my left IT band. It was frustrating and sad for me, but I'm back in training, and I'm working hard to make sure that I make it to race day healthy!

And once again, I'm working to help find cures and more effective treatments for blood cancers. Like the other members of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training (TNT), I will be raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma.

No matter how tough things get on my runs, I also remember that things are much tougher for those suffering from blood-related cancers, people who struggle every day with problems much more dire than a simple run. I remember that THEY are the people I'm running for. People like my grandmother Seretta, who passed away from lymphoma when I was 14 (and to whom I'm dedicating my run).

The funds I raise will help aid research and treatment for current and future generations of blood-cancer patients, and you can help me out, even if it is just a small donation. All contributions are tax-deductible.

I'll continue to give updates as I progress closer to race day (November 3rd), and I look forward to hearing from many of you in the upcoming months!
