After the marathon last year, I almost quit running. I mean, it's not like I'm any good at it. I'm probably always going to be a back of the pack runner, no matter how hard I try. And it's been almost two years now since Angi died. Shouldn't I be over it by now?
But the thing is, I'm not over it. I've said before that I would run to the moon if it would bring Angi back, and that's still true - and still impossible. In the past two years, I've heard of great strides in blood cancer research. More and more people are surviving these cancers and that's an awesome thing to be a part of. It's great when we get to celebrate someone's loved one who is cancer free.
But still, there are so many stories that end like Angi's. There are so many Saturdays that I start my run with red, teary eyes after hearing one of those stories, and I still can't tell Angi's without sobbing.
Every four minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. Every. Four. Minutes. The five-year survival rate for adults who are diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (the type Angi had) is still only forty percent.
So here I am, again. This year I've signed up to run a half marathon on Saturday and a full marathon on Sunday - 39.3 miles in two days. Once again, I seriously doubt my ability to complete this challenge. Once again, I ask for your thoughts and well wishes - and yes, your financial support. Because until there are no more sad stories to tell, I'll keep running, and we'll keep raising money, and one day....maybe one day soon....we can run for no reason other than the pure joy of being alive.
