Racing to Save Lives
That is a picture of me a mere 28 months.
In February 2007, I was biking across an intersection when a truck flew through a red light and changed my life. It took me 2 months to learn how to walk again and 6 months to start running again a few times a week. Even though I have fully recovered, I've avoided too much strenuous activity for the past couple of years. This year, now that I am doing much better, I've decided to step up the pace a little and train for the Maui Marathon on September 20, 2009 with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training.
Team In Training is LLS's fundraising program that trains anyone who wants to participate to run a marathon. In addition to training for a marathon, all of us in Team In Training are raising money to help find a cure for blood cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and Hodgkin's disease. Like me, people who have Leukemia or Lymphoma, along with their families and friends who support them, face tremendous obstacles. Each of them faces medical treatments that can be painful, an unsure future, and financial hardship due to the high cost of healthcare. Training for and running this marathon will let me directly help people who face these uncertainties head on.
The money I raise will go directly to patients and their families in the form of support groups, educational programs, and financial planning. Additionally, money raised through Team In Training will fund grants for doctors who are working toward better treatments and cures for blood cancers. This research is critical because blood cancers kill more children in the U.S. than any other cancer and strike adults as well. Every 5 minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer and every 10 minutes, someone dies from these diseases.
This is where I'm hoping you come in. I am confident that with the coaching and support I will get from Team in Training I will be able to run 26.2 miles (albeit slowly) by September 20. However, I need your help to reach my fundraising goal of $5,000. Every dollar that you donate is tax-deductible, and at least 75 cents of every dollar donated to LLS goes directly to patient services and blood cancer research.
Thank you very much for your support. I can't do this without you!
