Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I'm training to participate in the 2010 Nike Women's Half Marathon in San Francisco as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

I chose to train for this event with Team in Training in memory of my grandmother, Marie Russo Dunphy. She was diagnosed with leukemia later in her life. While she was extremely fortunate to have been diagnosed with a milder form of the disease, she still felt its effects every day. Despite everything she managed to keep her spirits up and remain her same feisty self throughout it all! She eventually lost her battle with leukemia in November 2007.

I know living with the disease wasn't easy for her, and neither will training to run 13.1 miles be for me. At the moment I don't consider myself a runner at all and am starting from scratch. While I know that my training is not even comparable to what my grandma went through, it's an experience that will challenge me and take me outside of my comfort zone. I'm grateful to be able to do what little bit I can to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society so that others may be so fortunate as to beat these cancers and realize their own dreams.
