Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's Disease, and Myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients & their families.

Did you know that an estimated 823,349 Americans are currently living with some form of blood cancer? That's more than the entire population of Jacksonville, Statesboro or Savannah! Think about this for a second. Imagine everyone you run into at the grocery store, everyone you are pulled up next to at stop lights, acquaintainces, family members, and coworkers are infected with an incurable blood cancer. These cancers can strike anyone at any time, without warning. Blood cancers originate in the bone marrow or lymphatic tissue as the result of an acquired genetic

injury to a SINGLE Cell. The cell then becomes maligant and multiplies continuously, interfering with the production of healthy blood cells.

We jokingly say things on a daily basis like, "it's not like we're curing cancer here", but in this case, you truly can. In just the past twenty years, TNT has raised over 800 MILLION dollars for The LLS via donations just like yours! In additions to the monies donated directly to patient services, advocacy programs, and professional education and counseling provided to patients by the 68 chapters of the LLS in the US and Canada, 550 MILLION $$$ of the monies raised by TNT have gone directly to research. Since the birth of the LLS in 1949, the relative five-year survival rate of leukemia patients alone has tripled in the past 46 years, in large part to the advances made in research that have been funded directly by donations such as yours and mine.

2008 is a very special year..........20 years ago, a man named Bruce Cleland rounded up 36 friends & trained to run the NY marathon in honor of his baby girl Georgia, who had leukemia. His team rose over $322,00 for The Society! They referred to themselves as the "team in training," and the name stuck. Twenty years later, the Society's Team In Training Program is the largest endurance sports team in the world and has seen over 340,000 participants cross the finish line of their half/full marathon, century bike ride or triathlon. Remarkably, they have raised more than $800 million dollars for lofesaving cancer research and to help blood cancer patients live longer, better lives.

As I said, 2008 is a special year......not only is it TNT 20th anniversary, we have our sights on a HUGE mile marker. In 2008, we hope to reach the $1 BILLION dollar rate mark! That is $1 Billion dollars that everyday people like you and I have raised for The Society.

I am joining TNT for my 4th season and training to walk the Nike Women's MARATHON in San Francisco October 2008. I would like to honor the 20th Anniversary and raise $10,000 this season!

Please help me acheive my fundraising goal.............Keep in mind that all donations are tax-deductible, completely secure, and every cent makes a difference. Even a $25 donation takes care of a medication copayment for one patient for one month!

In addition to fund-raising for The LLS, I am a Full Time Dietitian at the St Vincent's Medical Center Mary Virginia Cancer Center out pt facility here in Jacksonville! My job is to make nutrition recommendations to cancer patients & their families to help them better withstand the affects of treatment.

Working with cancer patients on a day to day basis is what gives me the motivation to continue training & raising funds for such a wonderful cause! I see everyday the difference it makes........

I am in the process of planning 3+ fund-raisers ths season.
