Mission Accomplished!
Jan 25, 2012 by David Maltby

Over $2000 raised to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and I ran my first full marathon. I could not have done it without the support of so many people: generous donors, my TNT coaches Barry and Michele, my family, and my Team In Training team mates.
The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend was a magical experience. From the Inspiration Dinner with speakers Bruce Cleland and Ethan Zohn, cheering on the super Half Marathoners on Saturday, running the full 26.2 mile Marathon on Sunday, to the Victory Party with almost 1000 team mates from around the globe: this was the Best. Season. Ever!
Photo Journal 89 pictures of the Team.
A little about my race day: I finished in 4 hours and 16 minutes, which I am very happy about. One thing I learned is that running marathons is a lot different from running half marathons. They seem more than twice as far. My goal for this first marathon was 4:20 based on a scaled back training schedule I had to implement following a tough (my knee got really banged up) Space Coast Half Marathon the end of November. I used a run-walk-run that kept me right on the 9:54 pace I needed. It was super easy through 13 miles, and even at 20 miles I felt pretty good. I was about 2 minutes ahead of 4:20 pace. Maybe a little sick in the stomach from too many Guu Chomps and 2 Hammer Gels. So I decided to just hammer in the last 10K. Mile 21 was my fastest mile of the day at 8:45. I started getting quad cramps coming and going over the last 5 miles but I massaged those out as I needed and keep running for the finish. All in all, a very good day.

My best fundraiser

My best fundraiser is my wife Connie. This last weekend she hosted a huge rummage sale that raised over $500 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. As a three-time Team In Training participant, she knows how hard we all work raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. She worked tirelessly to find donors of great items to sell, picking up those donations, and then pricing, organizing, and making the all the items look good. Thanks Connie for making a difference in someone's life.

I am racing to save lives...
...by training to participate in the Disney Marathon in January 2012 as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. I have a mission-to help find cures and more effective treatments for blood cancers.
The face on my misson is this wonderful little boy Enzo. His family had just moved from NJ to the neighborhood next to mine when he was diagnosed with leukemia (ALL), but already LLS is stepping with support. Because we all can give back.

Please make a donation in support of my efforts with Team In Training and help advance the research for cures.
Like the other members of TNT, I will be raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. I’m improving the quality of my life by participating and with your support, I can help improve the quality of life for patients and their families as well.
Check back frequently to see my progress on meeting my fund raising goals and my training goals. Follow me on Twitter. I tweet daily about my training progress and on the Team's progress.
