36 days until the San Diego Rock n’ Roll Marathon!!!

After our longest training on Saturday the 23rd (20 miles and over 4 hrs 23 minutes), I got stung by a wasp on my left hand. Even though I never seemed crazy allergic before, my hand swelled up so badly I couldn’t bend my fingers completely and it felt very tender. To be on the safe side, I made a doctor’s appointment that Monday after work and apparently it became a low grade staph infection. Just the words “staph infection” made my mouth drop open. I can’t imagine how I would react if I got a cancer diagnosis of any kind. Just getting 2 antibiotic prescriptions made me nervous about how my body would react and what activities I had to stop or hold back on until I was better. Luckily, I got a discount at the pharmacy and it only cost me $7 to get both medications. Despite this little health hiccup, I feel lucky it wasn’t far worse and I am already recovered.

If you can donate, think how this money can be used to help people that need to deal with Leukemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma or any other form of cancer everyday with no end in sight.

$1000 Would help the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fund a researcher

$500 Would provide patient aid to a person with cancer for one year

$100 Would provide a patient with transportation from home to a cancer center

$75 Would provide bone marrow typing for a family member of a patient with Leukemia

$50 Would register a person to be a bone marrow donor

$25 Would pay the cost of a patient’s chemotherapy drug prescription co-payment

In case you tried to donate with my original link (which I mistyped), here is the correct one again.

Recent Fundraisers and Races:April 17th Frogman Olympic Triathlon (1500m ocean swim, 24.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run) Daytona Beach Shores, Fl (100% of net proceeds went to the Naval Special Warfare Foundation)

(29:55 swim + 2:29 transition + bike 1 hr 17 (19.4/5 rate) + :40 transition + 1 hr 2 (10:04 pace) run= 2:52:47 and according to my heart monitor 1,711 calories!!

1st place out of 1 in Athena (I would have been 2nd in my age group). More important than winning is that I actually met my 2 goals of not quitting/slowing down and finishing strong/passing as many people as I could at the end (guys get a 3 minutes head start so it is more fun to pass them). Thank goodness for warmer weather BUT there was a wind battle on the water and on land. The swim was crazy choppy (no strong current this time or freezing water to motivate you) and I was almost 10 minutes off from last year. The bike was a lot more fun (despite doing the Dunlawton bridge twice) until we hit the wind going up A1A. I felt strong heading onto the run that went up AIA then back down on the beach then BACK up the beach against some serious wind before heading back down A1A. Thank you Nancy, Theresa, Kenyon, Jerry, Sherry, Heidi, Lani and Bridget!!

Saturday, April 30th 7pm-Fireworks after the game!! Daytona Cubs baseball game. We sold the tickets for $7 (we got to keep $3 each) and we also had a table set up outside the stadium selling raffle tickets for $1 each for some amazing donated items. Thank you to Mom, Dad, Alex, Seb, Nancy, Emery, Heidi, Dennis, Andy, Brandon, Lissette, Jeremiah and family for buying tickets and coming out!!! Special thanks to all of the team—Louise, Lisa, Deb, Deb, Bob, Tim and team alumnae Bill, Tonya and Trena!! This was a great fundraiser and saved us from spending money out of our pockets that we may not get back. On a lot of previous fundraisers, at first you think you made a profit and then you have to deduct all the things you had to buy in order to sell them (tie dye t-shirts, cake ingrediants, bears, bracelets....). The motto this year has been WORK SMARTER, NOT HARDER! If I could have sold snacks to my kids at school, I would have been done 2 months ago though!!!

Cub tickets/raffle: $150 of pure profit!! + my split after a final division!!

Upcoming Fundraisers and Races:

April 24th to whenever!! I have more stuff I didn’t want but they were too nice to sell at my garage sale so I am selling them on Craigslist!! Fingers crossed that they all sell!!

May 7th FL.ROC Running Obstacle Challenge http://www.fl-roc.com/ Daytona Beach, Fl This is a 3 mile course with 12-14 challenging obstacles spread throughout the course. Some of the obstacles include low crawls, military walls, maybe some water, maybe some mud, you never know, maybe even a slip n slide. Two friends and I did a similar race with lots of mud before and it is a must do—like being a wild little kid!

Recent Fundraisers and Races:

March 12th Victoria Park 5k (3.1 miles) Deland, Fl Results: 25:27(8:11 pace) I did my 2nd 5k here back in 2006 and finished in 28:00 with a 9:02 pace. This one hurt more but I was able to race with more friends this time!!

March 17th and 18th garage sale: $50 Not the best result but I donated the rest of the items to a teammate’s garage sale.

Upcoming Fundraisers and Races:

On Saturday, I did a 2hr and 40 minute training run with the team and today I did a 43 minute bike and a 27 minute run with a friend to get ready for an upcoming triathlon. It gave me plenty of time to brainstorm about possible fundraisers!!

April 13 - May 13 A teammate is doing a promotion at Pizzeria Uno for the whole month. They will earn 15% of sales up to $1,000 and then 20% for over $1,000. Coupons are good at all 6 locations: Daytona Beach; Winter Garden; Melbourne; Lake Buena Vista; Kissimmee; and I-Drive and includes dine-in, take-out, catering, delivery.

April 13th 5-8 pm There will be a kickoff night at the Daytona location. Two guest bartenders will each be assigned a special drink to promote and a competition to see who sells the most of each drink. The restaurant is also donating a "Snack Hour Party for 10" for a door prize (one free beer or wine and appetizer each for 10 people).

April 17th Frogman Olympic Triathlon (1500m ocean swim, 24.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run) Daytona Beach Shores, Fl

(100% of net proceeds go to the Naval Special Warfare Foundation) I did the swim for the relay team, Perfect Strangers, last year and haven’t done this distance since 2008. Eek!!

Saturday, April 30th 7pm-Fireworks after the game!! Daytona Cubs baseball game. We are selling tickets for $7 (we get to keep $3 each) and we will also have a table set up outside the stadium selling raffle tickets for some amazing donated items. I will also be selling some of the tickets at the April 13th Pizzeria Uno’s kickoff night.

If you are local but you can’t make the game BUT you would like to enter into the raffle, let me know you would like to enter this raffle instead of the one for the ishuffle.

IF YOU DONATE A RAFFLE ITEM, IT IS A GREAT WAY TO PROMOTE YOUR BUSINESS!! We want to help you spread the word about your business!!

Happy Spring and thanks again for your support!!

My Fundraising Page
Feb 20, 2011

Hello everyone!!! February 22, 2011

In the fall of 2007, I nervously decided to join The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program. After running in only two 10k (6.2 miles) races and a handful of 5ks, I decided to fundraise $2,400 and run the Disney marathon to honor my grandparents and friends that suffered from cancer. With your help and a lot of training and fundraising, I struggled but finished in 2008 (5:52:22 -13:26 pace) and again with the Team in 2009 (5:19:18-12:11 pace)

Since then I have raced in 2 more marathons (Disney 2010 4:57:33-11:21 pace and the Donna 26.2 for Breast Cancer this Feb. 13th 4:33:16 -10:26 pace in Jacksonville, Fl), multiple 5k-half marathon races and Sprint-Olympic distance triathlons. I have literally worked my butt off (down 40+ pounds since the first Disney and 60+ from my heaviest) and I can’t imagine a week going by without e-mailing or seeing a teammate.

While Team in Training transformed my health for the better, hearing about a recent diagnosis (a student’s Mom) or a recent death (my parent’s 55 year old neighbor) reminds me how quickly any form of cancer can decimate the health and life of people of any age. Even though I try to yell “Go Team!!” when I see a purple Team jersey go by, help teammates fundraise or make a donation, I don’t feel like it is enough. In 1949, a diagnosis of leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma was almost always fatal. Since 1949, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has devoted $424 million dollars toward research and the development of treatments such as Gleevac to battle all forms of cancer. Today, thanks in part to this research, survival rates for some blood cancers have doubled or tripled. Since it began in 1988, more than 440,000 Teams in Training (TNT) volunteers have raised over $1 billion to help improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Since our work is far from over, I have decided to fundraise $2,700 and run the San Diego Rock n’ Roll Marathon on June 5th.

Whether or not you are able to donate, I want to let you know what I am doing and thank you for your past and future support. If you are able to help, please donate online at http://pages.teamsintraining.org/ncfl/rnrll/acooperlki

As a thank you for your donations, every $10 donation earns an entry into a drawing for a new Apple ipod shuffle. If I raise over $500, I will pull for a 2nd ipod shuffle. I will announce the winner or winners on May 14th.

If you own a business or know someone that does and would like to sponsor the team and appear on all of the Central and Northern Florida chapter’s race jerseys, I can meet with you and show you our sponsorship levels. If you are willing to donate any items that can be used in a silent auction or a raffle (to help promote your business as well!!), please get in touch.

Thanks and Happy 2011! Alison
