Racing to Save Lives

Hi! Thanks for stopping by my Team In Training home page.

I signed up a few weeks ago to complete the City of Oaks half marathon in Raleigh as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training, but have since decided to train for the Nike Women's full marathon in San Francisco. TNT is a great organization that trains participants to accomplish physical goals they never thought possible and in return the participants help raise money to fund blood cancer research and find treatments that were never thought to be possible. Until race day (November 1st) I will not only be training with the team but also raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am training for and will be completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers and also in honor of my Grandma Barb, my Grandpa Pudge, and my Grandpa Buck who have had to fight their own battles with cancer.

Any donations to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission would be greatly appreciated. You may either make a donation directly on this website or by sending me a check made out to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Also, let me know if you would like to donate in honor or in memory of someone in particular. Please e-mail me their name so I can keep them in mind while I train, recognize them on this website, and wear a ribbon for them on race day.

I will be using this web site to keep everyone updated on my progress during training. Please feel free to check back often. If you have any questions, comments, or would just like to say hi, please feel free to contact me at kmstaub@gmail.com or (972)-965-4402.

Thanks for your support!

My Training Progress:

Saturday, June 13

Today was my first run with the TNT group, it was really nice to meet all my new running buddies. It was a beautiful morning, and we ran on the 3 mile Al Buehler trail around the Duke golf course. Lauren is visiting so I dragged her out of bed at 7am to come. She was none too pleased, but we ran almost the whole way and finished in just over 30 minutes...I'd say the first day of training was a success. Only 10 more miles to add :)

Thursday, June 18th

Today, after unconciously hitting the snooze button a few times, I managed to drag myself out of bed for the 6:30 midweek run led by my mentor Lindsey. I thought that after less than 6 hours of sleep and a two mile run i'd just want to come home and take a nap, but I am surprisingly energized...I think I can get used to this!

Saturday, June 20th

We did a great 4.25 mile run in Chapel Hill today. by 7:30 am it was actually pretty hot and humid, but it was on these nice trails through the woods and by a creek so that made it a bit better. I dragged Matt along with me, we stayed together for the first 2 or 2.5 miles but then he and some other guys sped up (or me and the girl I was running with slowed down) and went at a slightly fater pace for the last bit...i think that was probably nice for him to have some people his own pace to run with. After the run, we grabbed a quick team breakfast at Foster's...delicious!

Thursday, June 25th

This Saturday is the first day that the training for the marathon and half marathon is different. I never thought I would say this, but I have decided that if I am going to challenge myself for the next few months I may as well challenge myself as hard as I can and start training for the marathon. If I can get enough donations I will try to switch my race to the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco, and perhaps just run the half in Raleigh for fun when I get back. As far as training goes, today my mentor was out of town, so I was supposed to lead the 2 mile mid-week run this morning. There were only two of us, but it turned out to be really nice getting to know another team mate better.

Saturday, June 27th

Today was the first day I slept through my alarm and missed the early morning group training, so as punishment I made myself go run the 5 miles at 12:30 pm. Luckily the trail I chose was fairly shady and boredom was my only real obstacle.

Sunday, June 28th

I slept in again today and had to do my 2 mile "easy" run in the mid day sun...this time on the much less shady east campus loop. Hopefully this weekend has taught me an important lesson about getting to sleep early.

Thursday, July 2nd

Went to the mid-week 2 mile group run this morning...they are losing popularity. This week it was only my mentor Lindsey and I. I think this was the last 2 mile week (next week we are up to 3), so I tried to enjoy it. Hope everyone has a great 4th of July weekend!

Saturday, July 4th

Happy Indendence Day! Training was little sparse today which is not surprising. We ran 6.2 miles around Duke's East and West campuses, and it felt surprisingly good. It was a beautiful morning and a great temperature for the first run in July. Hopefully it will stay this nice for the rest of the summer, but I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up.

Thursday, July 9th

We're up to 3 miles noe for our mid-week runs. I found another group to go running with on Tuesday mornings, so now most of my runs each week are in a group which makes them go by so much quicker. Today however people must not have set their alarms because I was the only one there at 6:30. I am going to need to get some music for my 7 mile solo run in Wisconsin this weekend. Tonight a bunch of my teammates and I are getting together to knit hats for kids with cancer. I hope everyone has a good weekend!

Saturday, July 11th

I'm in Wisconsin this weekend for my cousin's wedding (Congratulations Mark and Melissa!). I was nervous about having to do 7 miles (further than I have ever run before) alone, but I dragged my dad and mom along with me not expecting them to go very far. My mom ended up (not surprisingly) running the entire 7 miles, and my dad actually made it about 5 and a half!!!! I was so amazed and proud of him...he is in much better shape than he lets on ;) We ran on the Glacial Drumlin trail in Wales, WI. It was a beautiful trail (we saw a mommy and baby deer jump right in front of us on the trail) and a beautiful morning for a run.

Saturday, July 18th

Today I am in Providence for a friend's wedding (Congratulations Jen and David!!). Luckily one of the bridesmaids, Jessica Hart, is also a member of TNT and training for the San Antonio Rock n Roll Marathon, so I had a great running buddy (you can check out Jessica's page at http://pages.teamintraining.org/ntx/rnrsa09/watchjessrun). We were in a bit of a time crunch since she had to be ready for hair and makeup at 9 am, but we ran a 9 mile route from our airport hotel up through some nice Warwick neighborhoods and out to the shore. Unfortunately, I there was nowhere to get food at 5:45 am, so I ran fueled by only gatorade and energy chews...not a good idea judging from how sick I have been the rest of the day. Breakfast is not a meal to skip, lesson learned.

Tuesday, July 21st

Matt and I were in Boston this morning before coming home. We ran a nice 4 mile route mapped out by my BC-alum friend Dan. It was a great misty morning for a run and Boston is a beautiful city, and this time we remembered to stop by a store to night before to pick up some breakfast:)

Wednesday, July 22nd

I have scheduled my first fundraiser this Sunday July 26th at Bailey's in Chapel Hill. It should be tons of fun, there will be food, billiards, and drink specials. I hope to see everyone in the Triangle there!

Saturday, July 25th

I am finally back to training with the team for the long runs. Today we did 10 miles in Umstead park. I ate breakfast this time, took it pretty slow, and felt like I could go a few more miles at the end. I also tried intervals this week. I have been hearing good things from lots of runners about interval training at higher distances, and I think they are on to something. You don't end up going much slower since you re-energize during the 1 minute walks, also I can now get some use out of the sweet intverval timer on my new watch :) This week was also Mission Week. We had some suvivors tell their stories' and other participants shared their motivation for running. It was really great to see first-hand how the training and funds we raise really do make a difference in people's lives.

Sunday, July 26th

The Fundraiser at Bailey's tonight was a huge success! We raised $255 for LLS. Thanks to everyone who came out :)

Saturday, August 1st

Today we ran on the American Tobacco Trail from downtown Durham all the way to Southpoint and back. I tried doing the 9 and 1 intervals, and ended up running the 12 miles in 2 hours and 10 ish minutes....about the same time as last week's 10 miles, and I felt pretty good! Only 14.2 to go:)

Sunday, August 2nd

You may notice that my donation total has gone from about $1500 to zero in the past few days...this is only because I had to officially change my race from the City of Oaks half to the Nike Women's full on July 30th. The TNT organizer assures me the donations will repost in a few days. Thanks so much to everyone who has already donated, your generosity means a lot!

Friday, August 28th

I am sorry I have gotten so lax about keeping up with the training log. I want to thank everyone who came out to Wine Tasting for a Cure! It was a great success, everyone had s great time and we raised $550 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Since then I have been pretty busy with family and friends in town and moving into the new house. Also, for those of you who don't already know, Oba my sweet 2 year old black kitty passed away this past Tuesday morning of pneumonia...It has been a hard week, and I want to thank everyone for their kind words and support.

On a more cheerful note, I ran 14 MILES this past Saturday! That's over halfway there:) It was quite the accomplishment, but the hardest run mentally that I have had to do yet. I wanted to make it back in time to take Mallory to the airport, so I ran too fast in the middle and had a hard time at the end, but I finished in just over two hours and 35 minutes. Tomorrow we are running 16 miles...AHHHHH! I'll let you know how that goes.

Saturday, August 29th

Today I ran 16 miles. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done...right around mile 15 I didn't think I could make it to the end, but my thoughts of Oba carried me to the end. Now my whole body (even after my ice bath) is sore, but I did it! Next week we are back down to 12--I never thought that would sound like such an easy distance.

Monday, September 14th

18 MILES!!!!!! It was amazing! Lindsey had a work thing and I had the Duke BBall ticket campout this weekend, so we both decided to run together today. Also, my classmate Tim who is training for the City of Oaks Marathon joined us. I have been doing the strengthening exercises the PT gave to me for my knee/calf muscle pain, and we switched to 9/2 intervals this week since the 16 was so painful for Lindsey and I, and it made a world of difference! As we finished the run I realized that I will actually be able to finish the full marathon in just over 4 weeks...WOOHOO!

Saturday, September 19th

We did an easy 12 down the American Tobacco Trail. My legs were still a little tires from the 18 on Monday, but I still went back to the 9/1 intervals and pushed it hard to finish at a less than 11 minute mile pace. Next week we run 20 and in 4 weeks 26.2!

Saturday, September 26th

WOOHOO!!!!! Lindsey and I sprinted across the finish line of our 20 mile run today. It was a great cloudy morning for a run, and the miles flew by. This is the longest we run before the race, and it has made me super excited for race day because, despite the joint pains and muscle aches towards the end, the sense of accomplishment after running that far for such a worthwhile cause was amazing.....And now i get to taper!

Sunday, October 11th

Yesterday was the last long run before THE long run. We did an easy 8 miler out at Umpstead. It went well, but I missed my running buddy Lindsey who was of in Chicago kicking butt in the marathon today (YAY Lindsey!). I leave on Friday for the race and will only do 2 more 3 mile runs before the big day...kinda crazy. I may do another update when I get to San Francisco, but I may wait until after the race. Thanks to everyone for all of their support, I couldn't have made it this far without you guys!

Monday, October 19th

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!! Yesterday I ran 26.2 miles around San Fran in just about the most perfect weather imagineable. Now I am sore all over and limping around like an 80 year old, and I never could have gotten here without everyone's support and encouragement.....THANK YOU!!!!
