This Syracuse University running back, was the First African American Heisman trophy winner. He earned that honor in 1961 and was congratulated in person by President Kennedy. The following year, he was the #1 NFL draft pick but never played a single NFL game. Nevertheless, his jersey #45 was retired in 1963 by the Cleveland Browns. His college jersey #44, synonymous with Syracuse football, was also enshrined having been shared by other legends Jim Brown and Floyd Little.

The answer:

Ernie Davis!

The reason most people, including knowledgable sports fans, don't know this historical athlete is due to the fact that this man was stolen from us and his destiny by lukemia. It was during preseason, with the Browns, that Ernie was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Still officially on the team's roster,

he died the next year at the age of 23.

Also known as the Elmira Express turns Syracusians (like myself)Orange with pride for:

1. His historic fight against racism

2. Leading Syracuse in our one and only National Championship victory

3. Facing leukemia with grace and courage

I ran14 miles on Saturday and feel great. I have beat my personal time in this distance thanks to my new running buddy Paul and some cooler weather.

However, I have slowed to a halt on my fundraising.

I am honored that you made it this far! Thank you for your support in this ambitious endeavor.

All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. Sadly, I'm sure we all have friends and families that have endured through the agony of this cancer.

My first encounter with Lukemia was my childhood friend Alex who passed away when I was 10. Since then I've witnessed other friends, classmates and students in a smiliar battle.These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line -a cure!
