Racing to Save Lives
In August 2008 my mom, Marty O'Sullivan, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Looking like a pregnant woman with her melon-sized tumor, she started chemotherapy. It was rough. She basically lived in the hospital over the next several months.
The good news: Because of the wonderful people at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, support from friends and family and most of all, my mom's uncanny strength, the cancer was eliminated. She has completed radiation and is now in remission. I am so in awe of her and as a tribute to her triumph I am running a marathon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as a member of Team in Training. I will be running in the City Oaks marathon in Raleigh NC on November 1.
Not everyone is as lucky as my family, and that is why this is so important to me. I will not only be running for my mom, but for all those whose lives have been turned upside down by this disease.
Help me reach (and hopefully exceed!) my personal fundraising goal of $3000 by making a donation. The money I raise will be dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services specifically targeting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Even better, the results will be right here in my community with funds going to Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill.
I have also started a blog separate from this site to document my progress in preparing for the run over the next five months. The blog is called "26.2 or Die" as in 26.2 miles of a marathon that just might kill me! The address is www.26point2orDie.blogspot.com. Please check it out, often! I hope it brings an occasional smile to your face.
Finally, this is a SURPRISE for my mom. So if you see her, try and keep her in the dark. I plan to tell her the total amount collected on her birthday, October 8.
