My Nike+ watch asked if I wanted to go for a run - this week, my answer was MORE THAN ANYTHING. But instead I learned to listen to my body....
Last Saturday we had 8 miles on the schedule. I was psyched. This is the longest run I have attempted since I have gotten fit. But when I woke up Friday and Saturday mornings, I knew immediately something was wrong. My leg pain (hip to knee) was back. I headed out for a warm up walk and knew I would take it easy if the pain didn't ease up. in fact, it got worse really quickly. I walked about 6 miles of those 8.....I finished, very slowly, and listened to my body.
After a visit to my doc and some conversations with my INCREDIBLE Team in Training Coaches, I have made a switch from the Greater Washington Run team to the National Capitol Area Walk team. I will finish this half marathon - unless something additional changes with my health and it isn't safe to do so - but this week I had to come to terms with the fact that this is not the half marathon that I will be running. . I will likely be walking almost all of this race.
I am thankful for the Team coaches and my doc for being frank with me. This was a tough week - turns out my TFL (that's a Tensor Fascia Latae) and my IT band are inflamed and damaged and need rest to heal. This injury is sometimes called a hip pointer or a hip flexor issue.
In dealing with this injury I have gotten to practice my patience and my perserverance. As tough as this week has been for me, I can hardly complain as this is nothing compared to what patients with Leukemia and Lymphoma and other blood cancers deal with. It has strengthened my resolve even more to raise my goal. I am committing to raising $1000 past the minimum for this race. I will raise $2550 before April 15. I am less than $250 away from this goal! Can you make a small donation to support this mission?
Thank you for all your support!
After the hardest 8 miles!
Last Saturday, I ran my very first ever 10K! That is 6.2 miles. I ran in the Nike Women's 10K race. This is a race you run on your own, in your own neighborhood, track or treadmill and record your run using a Nike+ device.
I ran out of my parking lot at my house, all the way down the road to the turn around (where the sidewalk ends) and at Kilometer 4.7. I ran back to my place, past my street and back around to finish up the 10K.
I felt good afterward and during. My IT band pain didn't return. My achilles felt great!
I am still running slow and steady - and not worrying about the speed. I feel like that will come as I consistently run more often and more distance. Build the distance and the endurance and it will become less work each time and the speed will increase. Until then, I'm slow and steady!
I think my fundraising is very much the same - I started off slow, a few donations, and over time I gained more confidence and asked more and more. I got creative in how I raised funds and I have surpassed my fundraising minimum. I have raised $500 over the minimum. That is $500 additional dollars I never dreamed I'd be able to raise for research and patient care. I want to stretch my goal and see if I can raise $480 more and meet the goal of $1000 beyond my minimum!
WIll you help me meet this goal? Every small donation helps!
WOW! You all have been so generous! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Over the last few weeks, two very important developments have occured:
Team in Training is such an incredible FAMILY - I have had support with both my injury and training and with the fundraising. I don't think I would have met any of these goals or even be still on track without the family of support here!
Last weekend after our training run we had our honored teammate picnic. We were able to hear the stories of how LLS is supporting families and patients as they battle these blood cancers. What a perfect reminder of why we do this - even when it gets hard, it is so worth all the struggle!
Teams are made up of individuals. Without them, there is no team.
Welcome to my Team In Training home page.
I have a mission-to help find cures and more effective treatments for blood cancers. To accomplish that mission, I’m participating in a half marathon as a member of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training. Like the other members of TNT, I will be raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. I’m improving the quality of my life by participating and with your support, I can help improve the quality of life for patients and their families as well.
I will be training for and running the Nike Women's Half Marathon in Washington, DC on April 28, 2013. Training for a race of 13.1 miles is no easy feat - but with the support of my teammembers and the Team in Training organization I will reach this great goal!
In return for the training, I have agreed to raise $1550 for research to find a cure and treeatments for Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkins disease and Myeloma. These diseases are terrible on those diagnosed and those that love them.
I am training, fundraising and running in honor of two AMAZING honored teammates.
I lost my Gramma May to Leukemia in 1998 after a long battle with this terrible disease. I am so honored to be fundraising and running in her honor.
Alex Nieves is a friend from the first school I taught in here in Virginia. He was diagnosed in 2010, a healthy college freshman and starting lacrosse player! He started chemo and the medications caused additional complications which meant more and more treatments. Today he is doing well, thanks to the support of family and friends, as well as the treatments available. He is in remission and will return to his lacrosse team this spring as they make another run for a national championship!
Please make a donation in support of my efforts with Team In Training and help advance the research for cures.
