Kane Is Able!!! September 14, 2008 Time for the monthly update. My biggest mararthon news is the HUGE bruise you see in the picture. I have been having problems with my IT Band, and have been going to physical therapy to get it worked out before the big day. Turns out, I bruise easily... On September 30th, my co-worker (Julie) and I are going to host a day of fundraising at The Greene Turtle Pub in Chinatown. Greene Turtle has graciously offered to donate 10% of the sales from the ENTIRE day to our marathon funds. If you find yourself in the area, please stop in for a bite to eat or a drink. It won't cost you anything extra, but will go a long way to helping Julie and I reach our fundraising goals. --------------------------------------- August 16, 2008 Is everyone as obsessed with the Olympics as I am? Phelps is going for #8 tonight, I hope he nabs it. Obama, who? Phelps for president! I needed to update the page to notify everyone that according to the latest Runners' World Magazine, "joggling" (juggling while jogging) is a legitimate sport. I about died when I saw a full page article about joggling because in my last post on this page I was disparaging myself for letting some yahoo who was juggling beat me in the Lawyer's 10K. NOW, however, I don't feel so bad. Why? Because some guy joggled a marathon in 2:50:09 (that is a 6.5 minute mile!). So, there. It wasn't as shameful as I first thought. Thank you for your support! The marathon is rapidly approaching! Kiley P.S. T-minus 4 days until the last year in my 20's. I couldn't ask for anything better than a birthday donation to my marathon fund (hint, hint). --------------------------------- July 1, 2008 Am I the only one that thinks running shorts are unflattering??? This picture is from the 10K. Not a great shot, but at least it doesn't show me getting beat by the GUY WHO WAS JUGGLING during the entire race. That was shameful. Nonetheless, training is going well. I have a 10 mile run coming up in two weeks. As with every week before it, it will be my longest run to-date. I've come to realize how non-runners train for marathons -- they get tricked into it. I started with 3 miles, then the next week 4, and so on. When you start getting to the double digits, you think to yourself, "well, I did 9 last week, so I can do 10." Sounds perfectly reasonable, until you are on mile 10 and then it hits you that YOU ARE RUNNING 10 MILES!!! Its really the perfect system. Add a mile each week, no big deal, next thing you know, you've run a marathon. Injury Update: No running injuries yet, knock on wood. However, I did take Julie's advice to ice down my knees after last Saturday's long run. I wrapped suranwrap around an ice block on the top of my knee, and an ice block on the bottom. This was Julie's seasoned advice -- she runs like a marathon a month, so she knows whats up. I get up to go to the kitchen, and just my luck an ice block slips out of the suranwrap and lands, hard, on the top of my foot. Bruised and abused. I would be the girl that trains for a marathon and then twists my ankle on the carpet the night before the race. Here's hoping that doesn't happen! A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE DONATED. AS OF THIS UPDATE, I'M 1/4 OF THE WAY TO MY GOAL! *************************************************** June 13, 2008 At 6:45 a.m. on Saturday morning...I got up, walked my foster dog Lucky, and headed toward Georgetown on foot. Two miles or so later I arrived at my destination-the Start Line of the Lawyers Have Heart 10K Race. 10K, you say??? Since when is Kiley a runner?? Well, normally I'm not. But this year...I'm doing a MARATHON. Yep, 10K is just the beginning...in October of this year I'll be running the San Francisco Nike Women's Marathon. So by now you are thinking, "Ok, good for you, you want to run 26.2 miles for no good reason..." Ah, alas, there IS a good reason. I'm running to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The money goes to help find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma (a.k.a. "blood cancers"). I need to raise a minimum of $3,800 to be eligible to run with my team in October....yikes! Please consider making a small donation to help me reach my goal. Last, but most important, if there is someone that you want me to run for...be sure to let me know and I'll include their name on my race shirt the day of the marathon. As I'm huffing and puffing through the race, I want them to be there with me, too. I plan to modify this webpage with updates as they come up....like the first time the ambulance has to come get me after a long run. Check back from time to time if you are interested in seeing pictures of me being carted off the track during training. Thank you for your support, both financial and moral! Kiley P.S. I work for the government...and truth-be-told Uncle Sam and Joe Taxpayer aren't doing me any favors with an employer donation....but, those of you with more generous employers may consider checking into the "corporate match" program your company undoubtedly has but conveniently forgot to tell you about. It would help me tremendously if your employer matched your donation...even if its $5!!! |
