You Never Walk Alone.

When I did my first half marathon with Team in Training (TNT), my parents gave me a necklace that read “You never walk alone”.  I wear it often, especially on days when I feel I need extra strength to get me through any awaiting challenges.  I wore it through each half marathon and during my first full marathon.  This year, I will wear it again when I speedwalk the Marine Corps Marathon Sunday, October 26th.

 

It has been four years since my last race with TNT, and moments of both joy and tragedy have filled the time since I last donned the purple and teal.  This year there will be one special person who I will not be able to hug when I cross that finish line.

 

My brother, Ronnie, died July 25th, 2011.  Somehow my heart kept pumping despite the hole left by his loss.  One day, memories of Ronnie brought a smile instead of a tear, and my heart felt strong enough to take to the trails once again. 

 

Help me to raise $5,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in Ronnie’s memory.  Not only will you be honoring a wonderful man, but you will also be contributing to research and support for blood cancer patients.  Ronnie would be proud of you…and me. 

 

I will carry a list of donors in my hip pack, and I will think of you with each mile marker.  I know Ronnie will be watching over me, and I will smile through the moments of pain and fatigue because I know he would be smiling.  This much is certain…I never walk alone.
