Today was the kick off meeting for the Team in Training summer season. I sat in a room full of people who all have the same goal I do: to complete a distance marathon and raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. By the time the summer is done the people at the kick off meeting will have raised $1 million.
It was great to feel the energy in the room and meet so many enthusiastic participants. I also got to meet the honored team mates. Those are blood cancer survivors who are part of the team to provide inspiration.
The kick off meeting has made me even more excited for our first run next week! I was so inspired that I went out and ran 6 miles today, I just hope that same inspiration will be strong enough to get me through 20 miles in a few weeks!
Why I Run
On June 20 I will be running the Mayor's Marathon in Anchorage Alaska. By that time I hope to have raised at least $5,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
My first personal experience with luekemia was when I was 19. I was in college and had been dating a boy for a couple months when he ended things with no explanation. A few months later I found out why. His father e-mailed to say that he had been a childhood leukemia survivor but had a relapse around the time of our break up and didn't make it.
More recently the founder of the law firm I work at succumed to non-hodgkins lymphoma. While I didn't know him well personally I have seen the effect that losing him has had on my valued coworkers who have known him for 20 and 30 years.
I'm running this race for Dan and Walley. I hope you will support me in my fund raising efforts to get to my goal.
