This picture was taken on October 24th, 2004, it captured one of the proudest moments of my life. I had trained for more than four months, I had just skated 52 miles though the hills of Georgia and even better, I had raised almost three thousand dollars for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society (LLS). I'm the second from the left, for those of you who can't pick me out from my skates :)
I didn't really understand until I let people know I was doing an event with Team in Training just how much cancer had affected the lives of so many people close to me. Understandably, the topic doesn't come up often in casual conversation. Knowing what I was undertaking helped friends open up about their experiences, and it was humbling.
LLS is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. LLS's mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Starting in 1954, LLS has awarded more than $680 million in research funding.
It's a new decade, I'm a few years away from a new decade myself and I've decided kick cancer's a&& again. This time, I'm doing it on a bicycle.
America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride is a century ride, which in this case means 100 miles of hills around Lake Tahoe in Northern California. With a name like that, it's worth the warning from my new teammates that no other ride will ever be more beautiful or more rewarding.
I learned a lot in 2004, but here's what was most important to me: when friends told me that they were fighting cancer, I had this feeling like there was nothing I could do but express my sympathies. When I started working with Team in Training, I realized that wasn't the case at all. I've had more of those sad conversations since 2004, so I'm asking for your support again, here's something that we can all do.
If you want, come back and visit to see how I'm doing. I'll also start a blog with photos once training begins, if you'd like to be in the loop on that just drop me an email at drphyllis@gmail.com.
To all of you who have fought cancer, and to those who are still fighting, this is for you.
Again, thanks so much.
Phyllis
