Racing to Save Lives
Hello Friends,
Well, I've completed my first full 26.2 mile marathon on Sunday June 6th in San Diego CA. What an experience "San Diego Rock N Roll Marathon" over 30,000 runners, 4,000 from Team In Training plus our thousands of supporters cheering us on along the entire route. Because of you we at Team In Training raised over $12,000,000 at this event for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I'm looking forward to our next marathon Karen and I are planning to run the 1/2 marathon at Kiawah Island SC December 12, 2010. Please help us make this effort a success for (LLS) by contributing what you can to this cause.
Below read the story of my friend Danielle

Charlotte Team's Honoree
It all began in January of 2009 when I slept for two days straight, I felt horrible. I told my sister I felt like I was dying and asked her to take me to the hospital. My whole mouth was nothing but blisters, I got to Urgent Care and had a fever of 104. The doctors ran some blood tests to find out what was wrong, they said my blood counts were "funky" and sent me to the emergency room. After being in the emergency room I was told I had mono with my white blood count at 1.3 and I was sent home. After two days I still had a fever so my mom took me back to the emergency room, more tests were ran and this time my white blood count was down even lower.
The doctor wanted me to see a Pediatric Oncology group and that's when I went to Blume Hematology and Oncology Pediatrics. They told me I might have Leukemia and they would keep running more tests. I was in the hospital for 10 days and developed a blood clot in my arm. My blood counts were not improving but they still thought I had mono. After three bone marrow biopsies and another hospitalization in February, I was finally told I had a rare form of Leukemia. My family searched the internet every day for answers, trying to figure out where to take me to find out what was wrong.
One morning I woke up with what felt like more blood clots in my arm. My mom took me to Blume to see Dr. Bolen and we went into the examining room which is where she told me I had Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL). Dr. Bolen explained I had a rare form of Leukemia but it has one of the highest cure rates. When I found out about my diagnosis I didn't cry, I felt like there is an answer to what is wrong and that it could be fixed. There was finally a name for what was wrong with me. They told me I was going to lose my hair and then I started crying, my hair was down to my waist and it was my pride and joy.
I was admitted into the hospital three hours later and I started treatment the next day. I told my mom and anyone who came into my room I didn't want anyone to cry in my room, nothing but happy thoughts here. The first thing I did was ask my sister to cut my hair so I could donate it to Locks of Love. I never felt like I needed something or someone to keep me going, I always made jokes and did my best to keep everyone worry free. My mom and everyone at Blume are always telling me how strong and brave I've been throughout the past year. They all agree my positive attitude has made my response to treatment so successful.

Over the past 3 months working with Team In Training I've taken 4.5 minutes off of my per mile times. I'm trying to lower my per mile time by .5 more to have a great finish in San Deigo on June 6th.
I'm training to participate in an endurance event as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of Danielle Burgess of Charlotte, NC and all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure! Check with your employer for matching contributions their donations will be very helpful to us.
