Racing to Save Lives
Welcome Cathy Speizman's Team In Training home page.
Dear Friends & Family,
Lexington, KY to Louisville, KY = 77.23 miles
Charlotte, NC to Greensboro, NC = 92.24 miles
Charlotte, NC to Greenville, SC = 100 miles
Boston, MA to Portland, ME = 106.69 miles
Can you imagine jumping on your bike to make any one of these trips? On June 6, 2010 I will be cycling 100 miles in the America's most beautiful bike ride in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Yes, that is 100 miles on a bike in the hills of Lake Tahoe! Although my initial interest in participating in this event was to honor my 41st birthday, I've come to know the real reason I'll embark on this crazy journey. I will be competing in honor of Danielle Burgess and the many adults and children diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma.
As a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's TEAM IN TRAINING program, I have pledged to train on the behalf of Danielle. She is a girl who was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) in 2009 while in high school. Her journey was not an easy one, but she is now living an active life and credits her positive attitude with making her response to treatment so successful.
The Team In Training program (TNT) exists to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. It also looks to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Every year, leukemia and other blood cancers strike some 107,900 Americans, and claim more than 60,500 lives in the United States alone. Leukemia is one of the leading causes of death in children between the ages of 1-15. The good news is that the survival rate for certain childhood cancers has risen from 4% in 1960 to 81% in the last decade.
TNT is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's largest fund-raising program. Each participant in the program pledges to raise a certain amount of money during the 4-5 months they train for their event. I have set a personal goal to raise at least $5,000 by May 15, 2010! Of that amount, over 75% of the money raised will be used by the Society for research, patient services and education.
I hope you will consider supporting me, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, but more importantly people like Danielle. It is stories like hers, and the many others I've heard that challenge me to keep peddling on during this training. Just last week on my second 30-mile bike ride with my training group I thought of Danielle. It was about 30 degrees outside and windy and I was freezing. I hadn't eaten enough breakfast, my muscles were weak and we were riding up hills over and over again and every part of my body hurt. I remembered that I have my health and if kids like Danielle can do it, so can I.
I want to thank you in advance for your love and support! This is an exciting time and I hope you will choose to support me in my efforts to make a difference. I will be thinking of each of you as I cross the finish line on June 6th.
With love,
Cathy Barton Speizman
