Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page (updates below)

Many of you know that I ran a few marathons for the Leukemia Society's Team in Training about 10 years ago. I was so impressed with the program and the money it raised for Leukemia research and treatment. Little did I know how much this would impact my life in 2008. Don has recently been diagnosed with Leukemia and Lymphoma. He is currently going through chemotherapy treatment. This time around I'm training to participate in the Marine Corps Marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training in honor of Don. As we go through Don's treatment process we have been so thankful for the strides that have been made in the treatment of leukemia. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers, but of course Don is in the forefront of my mind with every step I run. I now know firsthand the endurance it takes to make it through the extreme discomfort of the treatments and the emotional stamina needed to succeed in the battle against cancer. These people (like Don) are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure! Since 1988, more than 360,000 volunteer participants have helped raise more than $850 million. So one person can and does help!

Please make a tax deductible donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission. 75% of every dollar raised goes directly toward leukemia research and patient assistance. You can donate online right here, or you can send a check made payable to "The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society" (mail to Becky Newman, 1858 Park Trail Drive, Germantown, TN, 38139). Corporate sponsorships and donations are welcomed; for donations of $750 or more you may have your company name or logo put on the back of the TNT jersey.

I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see our progress. Thanks for your support!

Update: Don had his chemotherapy treatment Tuesday (7/15/08), Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday he got a shot that makes his bones produce white blood cells. The shot and the chemo will make him feel awful for a few days. He has more shots every day next week. Don's attitude is amazing! His loving and gentle spirit make my job so much easier. Our Team In Training group has a long run tomorrow, and it will be tough in this heat. However, I can see now how this pales in comparison to what cancer patients go through. They have to have such incredible endurance and mental toughness.

Update: (9/14/08) Don's doctor told him this week that he is in remission!! Obviously we are so thankful for the research made possible by donations. Since both of Don's parents died of Leukemia, we are very blessed to have access to the treatments available today. As of right now, there is no cure, so they hope to keep Don in remission for 2-4 years. He feels so good since he has had a break from chemo treatments. Check back for further updates as he will continue to see the doctor on a monthly basis. Please keep those donations coming for further research and advances in treatment. There is no way to express our appreciation for the support of our friends! I have run many marathons where I see others running in memory of a Leukemia patient, and families standing on the side of the road cheering us on while holding posters in memory of a loved one. How wonderful to be running in honor of my loved one instead of in memory of him.

"Sweetheart Just a note not only to let you know how much I appreciate your efforts to raise money for Leukemia & Lymphoma research, but to also let others who might read this know how much I appreciate what you are doing. As you have heard me say, I almost feel guilty that my treatments have been so much easier that those of my Mother or Dad. I am extremely thankful that you were running to raise money for Leukemia & Lymphoma research even before you knew me. Im hopeful the money Team in Training is now raising will not only benefit me in the near future; but possibly, since this is hereditary, it may benefit my sons, nephews or nieces. Thanks for what you are doing, and for being there. I love you, Don "
