Madeline's Fundraising Page: LLS Team in Training Half Ironman (70.3)

Why LLS and Team in Training?
May 05, 2016 by Madeline Emsick

It’s hard to believe that a year ago I was volunteering with Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for Light the Night Walk and Man/Woman of the Year. I was partially roped into volunteering by one of my best friend’s Anna, but also because the mission of LLS had some punch behind it. I had no idea that less than a year later, I would be diving in head first to fundraise for an organization whose mission has taken on a completely new meaning to me.

On June 12th I will be competing in my first half Ironman in memory of my Uncle Rich and in Honor of my cousin Ally. My Uncle Rich passed away on December 22, 2015 after a 3-month journey battling cancer. My brave 12 year-old cousin Ally is currently undergoing 22 week treatment of chemo and radiation for Synovial Sarcoma in Chicago.

Watching the pain cancer has caused my family and the strength it takes to fight it, I didn’t want to sit on the sidelines while another family member was going through treatment. In solidarity, I have been training with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training of the KC Chapter. To send encouragement or to follow Ally's journey check out her page Allys Allies

Through the Team in Training, we have had the support of a coach, a training regiment, nutritional advice, a great group of athletes with a common goal, and lots of support. Beside the challenge of training for and running/biking/swimming 70.3 miles, we are also committed to fundraise to support the Society in its battle against blood-related cancers. Leukemia is the number one disease killer of children.

As of today I have swum 16.5 miles, biked 380 miles (410 after today’s ride), and ran 68 miles. As to be expected of a Midwest Spring, there have been some tough days of training in rainy, cold, and windy weather. BUT with Uncle Rich’s spirit, the inspiration of Ally’s strength and our whole LLS team, I feel so honored to be a part of something much bigger than me.

While significant progress has been made, there is more work to be done in the fight against these diseases!
