Racing to Save Lives

Training journal at bottom of page....

I'm training to

participate in the Celebration Sprint Triathlon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. The real heroes on our team are the people battling blood cancers and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

Please donate to show your support for our team.

I hope you will visit my web site often.

Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your

support!

First group run. It went kinda like this....Get up in the early morning. COLD. Snow dusted everything. I can see my breath fogging the windshield. Can't find the scraper but I find an old towel in the backseat and wipe off the windows. Arrive at the meeting place.

Start jogging. Wave at the other runners as they pass me by. Cough, pant wheeze in the cold air. Walk awhile. Jog again, cough pant wheeze, walk awhile. Continue for 2.6 miles around the lake. Go home.

March 12

Out for a longer jog this week and it honestly felt really good. I NEVER thought I'd say that in my lifetime. I had a route mapped out and my mother watched Arlo for me. Of course disaster is never far for me. The street names were different on google than they were in real life, so I went by my turn and ended up getting lost. There was no easy cut through, so I just kept going . It started getting late. I was supposed to pick Auggie up in 1/2 hr. I started thinking "SHIT, I"m going to have to call someone to come get me!" and could only imagine the humiliation of that. Luckily I managed to figure out where I was and walked/jogged the rest of the way back to my mother's house. There were some HUGEhills and I mostly walked them, but overall it was a good workout. The bonus? I didn't feel like I was going to DIE the next day. Thank you Galloway for your hammering home the importance of walk breaks in your book!

March 14

Did a run/walk 5k this weekend. It was rainy and chilly in the morning. Auggie has croup. He was up coughing much of the night. I couldn't decide if I was going to run or not. After hemming and hawing about it I decided that I should go. So Iwent. I was glad Idid. I had my typical ouches at about 2 miles. It seems that at 2 miles my hips just start to hurt. They are still healing from pregnancy. Idid a little more walking than running after that point. At the finish line I met up with some friends. We looked for the shuttle bus that was supposed to take us back to parking, but didn't see any such thing. We ended up walking back up Charles Street, and stopping for a beer. What a FANTASTIC beer that was! Ireally enjoyed my time with girlfriends. We walked back to the car and home...so technically we went 10k right?

First group training ride. We did laps around a 2 mile loop in Columbia. There were some gentle rolling hills, but nothing taxing- perfect to practice. Kevin was nice enough to ride along side me and chat about photography. It helped me relax and get a good pedaling cadence. I'm still terrified of traffic.

Swim practice. I felt like crap all day because lack of sleep still haunts me, but went to practice anyway. I was glad I did because it was the best I felt all day. We did away with lane ropes to practice swimming in a bit more chop. Fun practice and I felt great when I got home and crawled under the covers.

Bike ride this week. Worked on some rolling hills with Ken (one of the mentors). The bike scares the shit out of me. Well, the bike scares me a little, cars on the road scare the shit out of me. This is the one highly unpleasant thing about training for this triathlon. I have such anxiety before riding because I am truly frightened when I am cycling.

On a positive note, I'm finally seeing some improvement in my running and I'm starting to lose a little weight. It is always a struggle to get the training time in. This morning I packed up both kids and workout clothes and dropped them at the YMCA daycare to try and get in a workout. After about a 2 mile run on the treadmill they came to get me because both my children had exploding diapers. Well...whatcha gonna do. At least I got in a teeny workout and it's better than nothing.

Last Sunday I had a lovely run up on the CNR trail. The marathon coaches invited us to train with them. They had water stops every 2 miles and it was nice to see lots of friendly people on the trail along the way. I did 6 miles, went home, ate a little, and then swim practice. Swimming felt great. My husband was in tech rehearsals so working out was difficult this week. Indoor running on the treadmill at the YMCA and a little swimming. Unfortunately I couldn't get a sitter for Wednesday night's ride and then Saturday morning's ride was cancelled due to bad weather. Off to a freezing cold ride this morning...
