Running to Save Lives
I am training for the Rock N Roll Marathon in San Diego, CA to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and I am so excited!
Just wanted to give a quick update. We are in the double digits in our training runs, this weeks run will be 11miles. So far I am feeling good and really enjoying the training. Jordyn is doing amazing and hopefully will be home next month. It is such an honor to run on behalf of her. For more in depth updates of my runs please see the link below to my blog.
And my reason for running ....
As most of you know my niece Jordyn was diagnosed with Leukemia (ALL) at the age of 15 months. She underwent aggressive treatment and gained remission until the age of 4. Again Jordyn bravely fought the cancer with chemo, radiation, and finally a bone marrow transplant at the age of 5. She was able to once again achieve remission and was cancer free until early September 2009. She is 8 years old and currently at St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, TN where she underwent a stem cell transplant. She is beating the odds and showing us all what a true miracle looks like!
I am running this marathon because I have always loved running and it has been a dream of mine to run a marathon. When Jordyn first relapsed with ALL for the third time I picked up my running to another degree. I figured if Jordyn could push her body and go through the suffering she was enduring I could run a measly 9 miles. I used it as an outlet and stress relief. Unbeknownst to me at the time Jordyn was a miracle in the making and is still here with us today.
What a way to celebrate her life and the climax of my training then running a marathon in her honor and raise funds to eradicate the blood cancer she has. Though she has the most curable form of leukemia (90% curable) she fell in that 10% that relapses. I would like to see a day when it is 100% curable! Hearing what she goes through on a weekly basis makes a marathon a walk in the park! It also makes me blessed that I have my heath to be able to do it! On race day I will cross that finish line with her name, JORDYN, on the back of my race shirt.
I hope you will visit my web site often.
