WELCOME TO MY TEAM IN TRAINING (TNT) HOME PAGE

Update 4/13/17

4 more days!  Thanks so much to all of you for your support.  What a way to remember Heather, Peter & Jane and to honor Dina & Emily.  I have so many others that you have told me about that I will be running for and I will keep them in my head and heart as I log the miles on Monday.

I've had lots of questions on the pnuemonia so I thought I'd answer quite a few here!

PNUEMONIA WATCH '17 FAQs:

Q: Do you still have pnuemonia?

A: No!  It's gone!  My lungs are still not functioning at 100% but I'm doing no damage by doing this marathon.

Q:  What does it feel like when you run?

A:  It goes between a tightness or burning in my chest to just a heaviness.  A lot depends on the pace I'm going.  The shortness of breath can be controlled pretty well and I only really get extra short of breath if I go too fast (or at what used to be an easy pace).

Q:  Is it annoying?

A:  Very.

Q:  How long will you be able to run? Will you need to walk?

A:  TBD.  I was able to do 15 miles the other week at a slow and steady pace.  I'll take walk breaks along the way and walk up the hills.  They get me really out of breath.

Q:  Are you still excited?

A:  Yes!  All the pressure is off and I am very thankful that I am able to even get to the start line.  While I'd love to have my perfect day, run a PR and have some of that glory, I'll be able to finish and keep the reason why I am even doing this in the first place in mind!

THANK YOU ALL!

Update 3/30/17

Training has been somewhat of an adventure.  If you recall, I was in a car accident back in December.  I was able to return to running rather quickly, albeit a little more painful that I cared to mention.  Once that passed, I got my annual winter cold.  I got sick again with what I thought was the flu about a month later.  I haven't been feeling that great since when I have been running and just chalked it up to not being in good shape due to some of the setbacks and lack of training.  WELL, the good news is I wasn't just out of shape, I had walking pneumonia.  I was diagnosed just over a week ago.  I was getting very short of breath demonstrating exercises in my class, walking stairs and then exercise seemed extra hard.  My body finally had enough and I went to the doctor.  I'm now feeling totally fine...unless I exercise.  My breath is getting better just a nice burn in the lungs as my airways get back to normal.  I'm resting and keeping my fingers crossed that they bounce back soon!

The great news is, this marathon was never about me. It does not matter how long it takes me to finish. Honoring my friends and raising this money is what does.  If I had to walk it tomorrow, I could.  It would be uncomfortable, kind of annoying to take so long, but really not a big deal.  While you always hope to try your best and enjoy the fun crowds you get when you are running, I'll be able to finish what I started and do this marathon.  It just might take longer (so don't track me on marathon day ;)

My team did their 20 mile run last Saturday and all did so great!  It was fun/terrible to watch, but I was really proud of all of them.  I see a lot of PRs in their future on April 17th.

Friends Update

If you followed our story last year, right around this time, my friend Dina Brownstein was officially in remission from her lymphoma.  We found out about 2 weeks ago that unfortunately, her cancer has returned.  She was feeling fine but in her check up they found some things they don't like.  Dina started chemotherapy Monday at Dana Farber and today will be her last day.  She'll have another round starting Marathon Monday.  She will most likely have to have a 3rd cycle of chemo and then a Stem Cell Transplant, which should happen in June.  The transplant will use her own cells and is very effective.  As you know, she is one of the strongest people I have ever met.  It will be a challenging six months ahead of her, so I ask that you keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

About a month ago, another friend was diagnosed with Lymphoma.  Emily is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment here in Boston.  We had actually connected Dina with Emily's husband, Dan, so that she could have someone to talk to about her treatments - as Dina had lymphoma last year and was going to work and living her life as normal as possible.  While Dina is going to be out of commission a little bit, I know that they will get to chat at some point and provide some good support for each other.  I'll see Emily Saturday and am looking forward to reporting back on her progress.  Please think good thoughts for her.

So, while I might whine about my lungs burning when I try to run, I have it easy.  If it takes me 7 hours to walk this marathon and finish once it gets dark, I'll do it.  For Dina & Emily.  For Heather.  And for Peter and Jane.

Marathons are easy.  What they have to go through, and did go through, is hard.
So we have to keep fighting.
We have to keeping running...
(Or walking while sucking on an inhaler)
And we will get there.

Thank you all so much for your never ending support,

Update 2/21/17

Last week, I attended Heather's memorial service in Denver, where she lived.  Per her request, it was a comedy show fundraiser to benefit the Dear Jack Foundation , a charity to support adolescents and young adults battling cancer, started by singer Andrew McMahon -- who made a surprise appearance at the memorial and performed two songs.  The memorial raised over $22,000 for Dear Jack.

A large group of Penn State friends were in attendance, and it was nice to be with an even larger group of people who loved her very much.  I was fortunate to have 3 Boston friends, who all now live in Denver, to join me at the memorial.  Elaine, who knew Heather in Denver, and Sarad and Annie - longtime TNT coach and runners who never knew Heather but care so much about the cause, and myself, that they came in support.

Heather's mother, best friend, cousin, AA sponsor and boyfriend, Justin, all gave eulogies before the show.  Their stories made us laugh, and mostly cry.  Justin recounted the 679 days that they were together, over 400 of them while Heather was battling cancer.  That when she got diagnosed, she gave him an "out" and he told her he loved her for the first time.  That in the last few hours of her life, he had to be the one to tell her that this was it.  As she did for over a year and a half, she fought it.  She loved her life and the people in it so very much that she held on for as long as she could.  Until she uttered her last words, "Okay.  I got it."  and passed away peacefully shortly after that with Justin and her mom by her side.

It's heartbreaking that they had so little time together and that so many of their days were filled with illness.  But Justin cherished every one.  While you might be able to be with the love of your life for most of it, or only 600 some odd days, they are treasured.  It was such a wonderful way to remember her and know that when it was her time, she was surrounded by such love.

Thank you to all who have reached out, it really means more than you can know.  And I don't share the story to make you all sad, I share it so we can be so grateful for all of the wonderful things we have in our lives.

Before we left the memorial, Heather's dad returned my Boston Marathon medal from last year to me.  I had sent it to Heather last year after she relapsed.  Our goal was that she would come this April to return it and watch me run.  Both Mr. Snow and Justin thought the medal was lost, but someone must have found it and put it in a photo album that was displayed at the memorial (see picture).  He was so happy to give it back to me (and find it was not a replica, but the actual medal!) and we agreed that while she didn't make it to Marathon Monday here on Earth, she'll have the best seat in the house.

Update 1/12/17

For those who have followed her story, my friend Heather Snow, one of those I am running for, passed away on New Year's eve after a year-plus fight against leukemia.  She was 3 days away from traveling to Los Angeles' City of Hope Hospital and beginning a clinical trial.   Her light and laughter is already missed on this Earth.  For those of us who loved her, we will try to spread the joy she found in the world with those who we meet.

Here is an article written about her recently: http://www.westword.com/arts/funny-girl-remembering-denver-comedian-heather-snow-8673489

 11/15/16

I am running on behalf of a few people. The first is my friend Heather Snow.  I met her on the 3rd day of college, when I had approximately 2 friends total. Her warm and funny nature made us fast friends and I am proud to say that has lasted the past 17 years. Two days after her birthday, on September 13, 2015, she bit her tongue. The next morning she woke up with her tongue so swollen she was unable to talk nor swallow. She took herself to the emergency room where they intubated her almost immediately for 36 hours, after which, they informed her she had leukemia and would not be leaving the hospital anytime soon.  After one round of chemo and a month in the hospital, Heather went home.  She had a bone marrow transplant that November with her brother as the donor.  She spent 100 days in the care of others, going out when she was well enough and finally was in remission!

Unfortunately, this past summer, she relapsed.  She underwent another bone marrow transplant.  Through the help of many, and LLS, she found a clinicial trial in Seattle that brought new hope to the situation.  At this time, she is unable to get clear biopsies and is undergoing chemotherapy to hopefully clear out the cancer.  Until then, she is unable to partake in this trial.

I am also running on behalf of my friend Dina Brownstein.  A few weeks after Heather was diagnosed in 2015, Dina was diagnosed with Lymphoma.  She underwent chemotherapy and as of March 2016 is in remission!  She is such an inspiration.  While undergoing treatment, she continuted to go to work, workout when she could and kept the most positive and healthy attitude.  Her and her husband, Joe, were out in the hills of Newton last Marathon Monday to cheer me on and were two of my biggest supporters.

Finally, I run in memory of Jane Gruber and Peter Braun.  Jane was a physical therapist and long-time team mom for my skating teams.  She is the person ultimately responsible for my current career path.  She dedicated her time to helping young skaters overcome injuries, both physical and mental, in a very unforgiving sport.  Her passion not only led me to my career, but many others as well.  Jane passed away three years ago from mulitple myeloma, but her spirit lives on in so many.

Peter was the father and father-in-law of good friends' of mine.  He passed away in May of 2015.  He faught a courageous battle with cancer and his spirit lives on in his children and granddaughter, Samantha.  He was a bright and funny man whose family were some of my biggest supporters this past year when I ran the Boston Marathon.  Kate, Jason and Samantha came to watch me run the maraton and Kate volunteered at out 20 miler water stop.

I appreciate you visiting my page and reading my story.  There are so many out there fighting and I hope to help them by running 26.2 next April

Thank you!
