A Journey Completed

A Journey Completed

It took a little over a year, with a stop for chemo in between, and today with your support we successfully completed the Boston Marathon.  I could not have done it without you.  In the process we raised over $117,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Yes, we topped our goal of $1 per sickly white cell.

The weekend was a celebration of life and spirit.  My LLS TEAM members, were out in full purple regatta today.  And my support team that was here, Steve, Karen, Frank, Janie, Russ, Jen, my nephew Michael, and my parents played an important role in helping me to the real and metaphorical finish line.

The day today was clear blue skies and actually a bit warm for running.  There was massive security presence felt and was appreciated.  All aspects of the day were so well coordinated it just felt right.

My hamstring held out.  I will never doubt my running coach Steve again when he suggests the crazy solutions like duct tape.  It held and I held up.

The day was not without emotion for all who were here.  Personally, I was overcome with emotion for the last 6 miles or so.  Especially at the crest of Heartbreak Hill and more so at the spot I was stopped last year approximately 1/2 mile from the finsh line.  When I reached that point, I felt that my run was really starting right there.

Some say I am crazy to have taken on such a challenge at such a vulnerable time.  Obviously as one of my supporters you do not agree.  And so I will go on looking for ways to make every day meaningful.

Thank you for your kindness.   I am humbled.

Sincerely,

Larry

The Finish Line is in Sight
Apr 13, 2014 by Larry Saltzman

The Finish Line is in Sight

We are almost there – the metaphorical finish line.  In the musical “Rent” there is a song “Seasons of Love.”  Its theme is the 526,000 minutes in a year and how are they measured.  The beginning and ending brackets to a year’s time may not always be defined the same.  A year could be the regular calendar, January through December.  Or it could be the Chinese or Jewish calendars.

In my case, it seems, the year has gone from the end of the last Boston Marathon to the current event.  Two days after last years Boston Marathon, my wife Sharon and I were interviewed by a local television station.  Sharon was particularly affected by the bombings as she was at the finish line grandstand with one of my honorees waiting to cheer me in.  Well, I did not make it that far, being stopped four blocks away, as she witnessed the bomb blasts in real time.

And so the question we were asked was – would I run Boston again next year?  In the immediate aftermath of the bombings my answer was probably no.  But 48 hours removed I answered that question by saying if my health allowed it I probably would.

When I received word this past July that treatment was necessary for my leukemia/lymphoma, two thoughts popped into my head.  The first was, OMG this is not a good thing.  The second was, “if my six months ends in December then I can train for Boston.”

How meaningful it has been to feel the warmth and support of so many people and find the inner strength to survive and thrive in the face of cancer’s wrath.  How meaningful to know that my attempts to raise funds so that fewer people will perhaps suffer from blood cancers have been so well received.

In this year, almost 600 individuals and families have contributed over $100,000 to my effort – record breaking.  And we are not yet done with $7,000 left to raise to meet my goal of honoring every one of my sick white blood cells before we wiped them away.

Thanks very much to all who have been at my side and supported my effort.  This has been one amazing year.

Sincerely,

Larry

Climbing the hills to Boston

Climbing the Hills to Boston

Most folks when discussing the challenges of the Boston Marathon think of “Heartbreak Hill.”  Actually it is not that much of a hill.  But after running almost 21 miles runners hit the proverbial wall and legs are screaming to stop.

But there is no stopping Team Dr Larry.  A week ago I received wonderful news from my Stanford oncologist who declared me a survivor.  No more PET scans, no more Stanford visits unless my cancer recurs.  I am cleared to hug people, and eat whatever I want, even sushi.  I am a free man.

This weekend we will embark on our last long 20-mile training run – the peak, so to speak, of our training.  A funny thing happened to me on the way to this day.  I had been feeling so well that I began to train as if to “qualify” for the run, which would have required a much faster pace, and in doing so I pulled a hamstring muscle.  Not a tragedy, but a humbling message to remind me that not quite 3 months out of chemo I am a part of a remarkable journey and life, like a marathon, needs to proceed at a manageable pace.

As I approach this peak of training, more than 450 of our Team’s friends and family have contributed over $95,000 to our effort – an incredible amount of money, support, and love.  Even though I strayed a bit from my training, I have not lost sight of the goal – curing blood cancers through ongoing research in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

At the beginning of this effort I gave myself a challenge to raise $1 for every cancerous white cell that was circulating prior to my chemo, all 115,000 of them.   My running buddy Steve said we could get to six figures, which with his support and the support of my honorees, I grabbed on to with real gusto.  The truth is raising $100,000 seemed almost impossible, but so were my goals for my previous Boston efforts of $25,000 in 2012 and $50,000 in 2013 both of which we exceeded.  So with your help, raising an additional $5,000 at this point in time doesn’t seem like such a long way to go.

Please join me, and as they say in Star Trek, “to boldly go where no one has gone before.”   Let’s break the six-figure ceiling.  This odyssey of mine has “legs” and your generous contributions give me and my honorees strength.

Again, I appreciate any support you feel is appropriate to give.

Sincerely,
Larry

Boston, can you feel it?
Mar 05, 2014 by Larry Saltzman

Boston, can you feel it?

Yes I can.  I am feeling the pull toward the finish line of the Boston Marathon coming up on Monday April 21, 2014.  For the first time in a long time I am feeling well.  It is interesting to consider that when health is sliding a slow gradual decline, it is not immediately noticeable how bad one’s sense of wellbeing is at a specific moment in time.  In my case, I am doing so much better now that it has only recently come in to focus how bad I was feeling – both for some time before I began chemotherapy and during those six months of treatments and beyond.

I have more of an appetite now, and my weight has come up.  Not entirely a good thing for long distance running but I am not complaining as I had lost a fair amount of weight leading up to treatment last summer.  My training is going well and I have worked up to 16 miles in my longest run to date.  This month of March will be the toughest month of training – long runs peaking at 20 miles and then a three week taper in April leading up to the big day.

And most important my attitude and mental energy are much better.  Perhaps it has something to do with the project I am now involved with for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in building a national patient registry to connect patients who suffer from blood cancers to specific education, treatments, clinical trials, and outcomes research to make sure that all patients are receiving the most affective treatment.  Or perhaps it it the amazing support that I have received from my friends and family, not only in positive energy, but also in the funds that have been donated to date in behalf of my LLS goal to raise $115,000.  We are pushing our way closer to that goal with over 350 people donating and pledging over $85,000, leaving $30,000 to raise – an amount that I feel with your help can be reached.

Please consider contributing.

In closing I found a new video presentation created by LLS to be very compelling.  It runs 5 minutes and one of the imbedded messages is that we don’t know which dollar donated is going to find the cure.  It could be yours.

Be well and I humbly ask for your support.

Sincerely,

Larry

Half-Way To Boston
Feb 03, 2014 by Larry Saltzman

Half-way to Boston

A marathon is 26.2 miles.  My fundraising goal for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) is $115,000.  In my running I have just passed the 14-mile mark for my last training run this past weekend.  And in my fundraising, with donations both collected and pledged, I have passed the $75, 000 mark, meaning in both aspects we are more than halfway to our lofty goals.  The Boston marathon will be run on April 21 and with your help I hope to meet both of these important markers.

When I last wrote to you I had completed my chemotherapy routine and believed I was home free and off to Boston.  It turned out that like most things in life, I did hit a minor roadblock.  That is, two weeks after my last treatment I developed what would become full body hives.  I never itched and scratched so much in my life.  In spite of eating Benadryl like candy the condition worsened until the hives were in my face and eyes.  It was time to go see some doctors.  My dermatologist was stumped.  My oncologist said she had seen this once before in a patient given the chemo drugs that I received, but at a much earlier stage.  I was treated with oral prednisone and miracle of miracles it has mostly resolved.

Having said that, I was surprised that the only apparent resource my physicians had at their fingertips were some mobile apps that listed general side effects of the chemo drugs I had been given.  Wouldn’t it have been nice if there was some large database containing experiences of those like me that could be queried to see if others had this problem and what treatments worked?  Unfortunately even with a surge in the use of electronic medical records healthcare is nowhere close to being able to share this type of data.

And in this challenge, LLS sees an opportunity.  That is to create a patient registry where information regarding the million people in the US who have blood cancers can have their information pooled so that data can be better analyzed for providing patient and doctor education, as well as information in new therapies or clinical trials specific to their condition.  This will be a wonderful resource when built and may in time also be applicable to others in similar situations.  To that end, I am pleased to let you know that I have accepted a position with LLS to be a leader in completing this project.  It is complicated and will take some time and adding this service to what LLS already provides regarding research and patient support clearly enhances their mission.

As with anything of value, it takes resources to build and maintain.  So I am asking you to again join me in my Boston effort to support LLS in their endeavors – continuing to be a leader in cancer support and solutions.

Please help me to make a difference in peoples lives.  Act now by going to our secure fund raising web page link.

As I have done in previous years, it would be an honor to include your name on a list that I will incorporate into my running attire on race day to help motivate me to the finish.

Sincerely,

Larry

Larry’s Chemo is behind - Boston is ahead
Dec 12, 2013

Yes, indeed, after completing six monthly cycles of chemo, my leukemia/lymphoma has been beaten back, now with normal blood counts and no active disease in my lymph nodes.  A miracle you might say, but really just good science, medicine, prayers, and support from you and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

This coming April, I plan to toe the line along with my friend and mentor Steve Polansky at the 118th Boston Marathon, raising funds for LLS through Team in Training (TNT).  Being able to train for this so soon after chemo is truly a gift, one that I am not taking lightly. Having said that, the Marathon this year and, more particularly, TNT’s efforts on behalf of LLS are not about me —

They are about the 150,000 new cases of blood cancers that will be diagnosed within the next year, the 1.2 million people living with blood cancers in the U.S. alone and the effort to cure these blood cancers now accounting for the third highest number of cancer deaths behind lung and colon.

They are also about enhancing the $1 billion LLS has already poured into research, including a new $15 million investment to study gene therapy techniques transforming a patient’s blood cells into “soldiers” seeking and destroying the cancer.

They are about fast tracking through the FDA a new drug, Ibrutinib, that is turning certain forms of leukemia into a livable chronic condition, as with diabetes or hypertension.

And they are about the grants that LLS provides to patients and their families who need financial help in obtaining vital care.

They are about honoring my long time friends Janie Gumpert, who continues to thrive after treatment of her lymphoma, and Mort Ehrlich, who is battling neuropathy side effects from his condition.

Finally, they are about the tragedy that surrounded last year’s Boston Marathon: 4 deaths, 264 injured and far too many limbs lost.  Since that tragedy, Boston, the city and its citizens appear to have come through that challenging episode stronger, “Boston Strong,” our national economy and stock market portfolios have rebounded, “Financially Stronger,” and, as hard as it may be for you to believe, these last 4 years and especially the last 9 months have made me “Physically and Emotionally Stronger,” with a greater appreciation for life and morbidity, that of others as well as mine, and I challenge myself to make each day meaningful.

I have been fortunate that, in spite of my cancer, I have been able to participate the previous two years running the Boston Marathon to benefit LLS, with TNT raising $1 million each year.  This coming April 21, 2014, there are a record number individuals – 240 – who have committed to run the Boston Marathon on behalf of LLS with a mantra of “TEAM Strong” and a goal to raise at least $1.5 million.

When I began my chemotherapy this summer, my white blood cell count peaked at 115,000 (the general population “normal” range is considered to be 5,000).  Therefore, my fundraising goal for 2014’s effort is $1 per white cell or a total of $115,000.   Once again, my wife Sharon and I will match 10% of any donations received from you, our friends and family.  We need your help and this is no easy task.

As I have done in previous years, it would be an honor to include your name on a list that I will incorporate into my running attire on race day to help motivate me to the finish.

Sincerely,

Larry

We need to have the list of survivors be longer than the list of lives lost. With your valiant efforts, and the efforts of others, we hope this can become a reality someday soon. Thank you! "
