Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

I'm training to participate in the San Diego Marathon as a member of

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All

of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia,

lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am

completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling

blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we

need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In

Training and help advance LLS's mission.

If there is someone that you would like me to run in honor or memory of please email me their names. I will pin there names to my race day jersey as a reminder of the reason I'm running! s.delutri@yahoo.com

Costume run!!

May 24, 2009

Yes, we ran 8 miles in costume!! LOL! It was pretty funny to see the faces of all the people as we ran by group after group of silly dressed runners! I wore my nurse costume (with running capris underneath) We had bumble bees,a Doctor, a nurse, a man riding an ostrich, ballerinas, a pimp, a banana, a red neck, a lady bug , some tourists and plenty more!! I think we all fully understand the concept of proper running clothes now! Running in Costume is HOT! ( and I don't mean sexy hot, I mean HOT hot!) I'm glad it was only 8 miles :-) So next Sunday is the Big Race!! I am so excited! It seems like I have been training for this event forever! I feel ready! Be sure to check back, one last time, next week! I will have a full detailed list of events for the race. I will be sure to let you all know my finishing time! Remember my goal is 5 hours or less! Wish me luck! :-)

Tapering down!

May 17,2009

We are officially on our taper, which means that we cut back our training until raceday. We ran 13 miles today and we will only run 8 miles next Sunday and the following Sunday will be race day! I'm so excited! I am ready to run this race! 13 miles felt pretty easy and I know that 8 will be a breeze! I am going to be very careful for the next couple of week so that I stay fit and healthy for the race! This training season has been a great learning experience and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I have met some really great people and made some really great friends! I look forward to crossing that finish line with them! Next Sunday is our "costume run" which means that everyone is going to dress up in costume to run the 8 miles...this should be interesting.... :-)

Happy Mother's day, here's 20 miles!!!

May 10,2009

Yes, you read that right! On Sunday, Mother's Day, we ran 20 miles!! I have to admit, I was feeling a little nervous about the distance. I woke up Sunday morning and had a good breakfast (oatmeal with bananas and cinnamon). The beginning of the run was great! I felt much better this week than I did last week! The first 12 miles of the run was great, I felt energized, upbeat and ,for the most part, happy. Then came miles 13, 14, 15... I wasn't feeling so good. I started to feel light headed, dizzy, nauseated and just plain crappy! I didn't understand what was going on. I was trying to keep my nutrients up by eating my shot blocks and drinking plenty of water but it was hard to put something in my stomach when I felt like I might spill my cookies! I was slowly falling behind the group when Mentor Dash came back to run with me. I explained to him how I was feeling and he suggested that I take this "special pill" that he had... It was a salt pill ;-) apparently, my sodium levels were down and I was over hydrated. This pill was like a miracle! About 5 mins after taking it I felt revived! I could actually feel my self coming out of the valley that I had been running in for the last three miles! After my revival, the next three miles were pretty easy! So, I finished my longest training run of the season!! Now we are on our taper down to marathon day! Just 3 more weeks until race day! Thanks again for all of your support!

Feeling tired...

May 3, 2009

Today we were scheduled to run 14 miles, but I think everyone was feeling a little wore down. Coach Chris must have realized how tired everyone was because he cut our run down to only 12 miles (I am very greatful!!) I haven't been able to sleep well for the past few days. I think maybe I am a little stressed about meeting my fundraising goal and knowing that I have some really long miles ahead. Anyhow, I woke up on Sunday morning and felt really tired. I just couldn't shake that tired feeling. I thought for sure that when I got on the road, running with the wind in my face that I would have re-energized, but it didn't happen! I ran the whole 12 miles feeling tired and lethargic. I'm not sure what happened, but I think I am really starting to understand the reason for the recovery weeks! I guess the only thing I can do is focus on doing all the right things to prepare myself for my run this week. This run is probably the most important run of the season.===20 MILES!!! To prepare I am drinking plenty of water this week, eating well, and (hopefully) getting plenty of sleep! Check back next week and I'll let you know how it goes! :-)

Getting closer! ;-)

April 26,2009

17 Miles!!! I know now that my training is really starting to pay off! On Sunday we ran 17 miles and I felt great! Sunday was a perfect running day! The sun was shining and the breeze was cool. We started a little earlier this week at 7am and we finished before the temperature got too high. I was actually a little worried about this weeks run because on Thursday I did some hill training and my calves were very sore on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday I hiked the trail up to the Hollywood sign, which is a pretty easy hike, but I was feeling the soreness in my calves. I went to bed early on Saturday night and Sunday morning I was ready to go! The soreness was almost gone! I ran the distance at the 10.5 min pace! I felt great for the whole run and probably could have ran another 5 miles further! This week is our recovery week so we will run 14 miles on Sunday, but next week we run our longest run yet... dun dun da dun.... 20 Miles!! Now, for the fundraising side of things, I have finally got a date for my wine tasting event!! Please spread the word! On May 7th, 2009 from 6 to 9pm at Fine Wine Storage (4144 Glencoe Ave., Marina del Rey, Ca) I will have my wine tasting event. The cost is only $35 at the door and includes the wine and dinner! A local wine steward will be there to answer any questions you may have about the wine! I hope to see you there!! If you can't make it but would still like to make a donation please use the link above!! My deadline is quickly approaching! May 13 is my dead line so if you haven't made a donation yet please do so now! Once again, thank you all so much for your support!!

I'm Back!!!

April 19, 2009

Well, I know it has been a while since I have updated my site and I apologize! On March 23, 2009 I lost my mother-in-law. She passed away with both of her sons holding her hands. It was a hard thing for our family to go through! We all flew out to NY for the funeral. I did miss 2 weeks of training, but I seem to be back on track now! I have ran for the last three weeks I just didn't make the time to update the site. So... Three weeks ago we ran 13 miles! That was my first run since my time off. It wasn't easy! I was really struggling at the end! I also had a problem with shin splints! (ouch!) I spent a lot of time icing my legs and that seemed to help a lot! The next week was supposed to be our recovery week to only run 10 miles. Well, let me tell you, it was no recovery week for me!! We ran like 7 miles straight uphill!!! I quickly learned that my body is NOT conditioned to run uphill! I did not keep up with the group at all going uphill! Mentor Joe stayed behind and pushed me along! (Thanks Joe!!) I really needed the encouragement. I was starting to feel defeated, but then came the downhill! (yayee downhill!!!!) I was able to pick up my pace enough on the downhill to actually catch up with my group! I was really glad to finish that run :-) Now, this past week we ran 15 miles! and believe it or not, I felt great! Most of the run was flat and I did very well to keep on pace! I still felt like I had energy after the run. So, I rewarded myself with a huge burger from Outlaws ;-) yummy! Well, I will be sure to post every week from here on out! This week we are running 17 miles! check back soon to see how I do!

Week 6

March 15, 2009

This week I have been so busy! I have been running around like a mad woman trying to get some fundraisers planned. I've got a lot of really great ideas brewing and I'll keep you posted as I set dates for all of them. As far as the training goes, I ran 10 miles today! (just think, that's not even half way!) but I did pretty good! I kept my goal pace and finished strong! We ran up San Vincente for a portion of the run (which is a slight incline) that kind of kicked my butt :-) I am going to try to put a little more focus on my midweek runs this week. I really need to run at least 3 times during the week. I haven't really been sticking to this schedule but as the miles are getting higher I should really pick it up a notch! Thanks again for all of your support!

Going 8 and feeling Great!!

March 8, 2009

Today we ran from Marina del Rey to Imperial Hwy in Playa del Rey then back again ,for a total of 8 miles! I was so excited to learn that we ran the total distance maintaining the 10.5 min/mile pace! I was a little worried about the run because of my slight set back that occured last weekend with my back ache, but when I got out there I felt great!! My energy levels were way up! I must have been running off of the excitement from the night before! On Saturday night I hosted my first fundraiser, "Fight Nite!" Taking into account the size of my apartment, I'd say it was very much a success! Thanks to everyone that came I raised $230 in just a few hours. I am currently planning my next event, which will be a Wine Tasting event. I will have more info about this soon! Well, that's all for now, but please check back again next week, we will be running 10 miles! God Bless!!

A Back Ache?!?

March 1, 2009

So I woke up this morning with a back ache!! It was really disappointing! I debated with myself if I was going to go run or not. I know that sticking with my training routing is important, but I also know that if my back is hurting and I run anyway, I could cause more damage and set my training back even further! So what I decided to do was... get up, do some stretching, take some Aleve, eat breakfast then decided if my back felt good enough to run. After all of this, I felt like I could get a light run in. So I got dressed, went to the beach and ran five miles. I probably didn't keep the 10.5 min pace, but at least I got up and made the effort. I'm hoping that my back is better by next week so I can get back on track. Another thing is, I have come to a stall in my fundraising! I really need your help!! Please! Every little bit counts! If all you have to donate is $5 then I appreciate it! Thanks again for all your support! I will let you know how my back is doing next week. God Bless!

5 Miles!!

Feb. 22, 2009

Well, I made it through five miles at the 10.5 min pace!! Everything seems on target for completing the marathon in under 5 hrs, but I still have a long way to go! I have met a lot of really interesting people so far. It's funny how everyone seems so open when all there is to do is run and talk :-) Running is definately a great way to get to know someone. This week our group tried to think of fun things to do as a group fundraiser. We have some really great ideas like Wine Tasting event, Kareoke contest, Bar Crawl, Fight nite... etc. Nothing is planned yet but I'm sure what ever we do it will be lots of fun. Well, be sure to check back next week! Will I be able to maintain my target pace for 6 miles?........

I'm in Pace group 3!!

Feb. 15, 2009

I was very glad that the forcast for today was wrong! It was supposed to rain, but thank goodness it didn't! It was pretty cold in the morning, but once we got moving I felt great! I ran with pace group 3 today for the 4 miles. Group 3 runs about a 10.5/ min mile. I am really hoping that I can maintain this pace throughout the season. If I can stay consistent with this pace I would be able to run the marathon in 4.58 hrs! That would be awesome! I met a few more people this week that weren't there last week. We all went to the Firehouse in Venice Beach for breakfast after our run. It was nice to have a chance to talk with everyone on the team and get to know them a little better. Well... until next week... ;-)

The 1st Run

Feb. 8, 2009

We met this morning for the first time. Everyone on the team including the coaches and mentors seem like awesome people. We only ran 3 miles today, but we have to start somewhere. ;-) I will post again next week to let you all know how it's going.

"Hi Sheena, I wish you a lot of success and I want you to run for me. I do not have Leukemia or Lymphoma. What I have is called Carcinoid Cancer and it's very rare. The cure is only on 4 % rate after 5 years, but as you know me, I will not give up and fight until my last breath take. That's the responsibility for all cancer patients and my family and kids. Good luck Ralph"
