Racing to Save Lives

Welcome to my Team In Training home page.

1 August 2010 Let someone know they matter.

The first of the month, it's always good! Well I had fun with a challenge last week. It was to guess what the number 15 and 29 meant to me. I got married on the 29th of July 15 years ago. It has been a great 15 years! It was successful 15 people donated $29. It was fun and silly. Thanks to those silly participants. :)

This week-end my family went to a Hot air Balloon Festival and camped. It was a great week-end. It is pretty amazing how the balloon actually gets up and the basket sits up straight. They first open up the balloon which just looks like you rolled out your tent, but 50 yards longer. Then they blow air into it to open it up. It looks like a half circle with the flat side on the ground. Then the hot air slowly lifts it up and the basket is sitting on the grown with the balloon above it. It's Huge! To keep it up, but not taking off they do a blast of hot air with the flame every once in a while.

Here is the amazing part...there are at least 10 people needed to do this process successfully! They are all working together to get this one objective taken care of while being safe. I thought I'm doing that as I train for my half marathon event! I'm not just running by myself I have a team, a team! We are not a lone in our struggles. There is always someone else out there whom we can ask for help. Let's help each other reach our goals this next week. Maybe no one will ask you to help them, but you could surprise them with something special.

Which brings me to another story that I think is worth sharing. I have a wonderful neighbor that lives next door. This family is always giving without expecting anything in return. She always has that egg or bag of tortillas that you need for the meal or recipe. She gives to you what she knows you'd love. She not only cares for friends and family, but also any animal in need of help. And she does it well. Well they recently gave us some wood from a fort in their back yard. Prefect for a tree house in our back yard. We thought about how to compensate the family. We surprised them by organizing the stuff on the back patio and cleaning it up with a broom and a hose. Now they can go out in the back yard and have a place to sit, exercise, and eat dinner. The look on her face was perfect! She was grateful just as we were.

Enjoy!

28 July 2010

Good nite to all! Hope you enjoyed this beautiful day of sun and cool breezes. Well in the last two weeks the team has run 8 hilly miles twice. This past saturday I missed, but ran the miles on sunday with friend Jennifer. We had some good conversation. And we survived!

This past week my family has been taking down a fort in our neighbor's yard so we can build a tree house in ours. This is a neighbor who gives without thinking just does it with a smile on her face. So today we surprised her and organized her back patio, so the family could sit outside and eat dinner. We created a space for her to come out in the morning when the air is cool and it's quiet to just be. It felt good to let someone know that they are cared about, thought of, appreciated, important to the community and world.

I think that is what I'm doing with sending out messages about LLS. I'm giving the info so that people I know can become aware of blood cancers, but also the opportunity to tell a family or individual that they matter. Through the donations, the well wishes for me, the hugs, just feeling proud of something. It feels good.

Tomorrow is the 29th of July and I'm going to give my hubby a great big kiss. Happy Anniversary, babe.

17 July 2010

Happy Saturday! This saturday I woke to looking at the clock and realizing that I had over slept. OOPS! Well what to do...I got up and went to practice and cheered for those who were running 8 miles with hills and temp at 92 degrees. It was a great feeling to see how amazing it really feels for those accomplishments to be completed. I saw it on their faces. When my friend was finishing you could tell that it was an increditable thing she did this morning. Jennifer it was great! She said "I don't know how I did it. Just as 3 months ago I didn't know I could do 3 miles." It must be said that we can do a lot if we want.

13 July 2010

Warm Tuesday night here in Van Nuys. Well our Saturday practice was great. We ran at Griffith park up the hills there for 8 miles. After we had a pot luck with all the teams it was fun. During the run I met many people. We laughed, we cheered, we walked! It was a practice with lots of people. I wasn't running alone.

On Monday I was up in the hills above the 110 FWY and did another trail run. It was a great work out. I ended up at the top and looked down onto the city. Great run!

Until saturday have a great week.

3 July 2010

Happy Saturday morning! Day before Fouth of July. It is foggy and there is a sweet little breeze. Well today was an easy practice, slow, cool and social! I had a great practice because I got to talk to my friend the whole time. Thanks Jennifer!

Well this has to be the 5th week of Practice. We are up to 7 miles, but have tappered down to 5 today. It's a great day to run.

I will leave you with this; We were on our way to our Independence day celebration and I asked my seven year old if he knew what we were celebrating? He said the beginning of our country, the day it was born. He is always surprising me with his quick answers.

Have a great holiday. Hugs,

Jolene

I'm training to participate in The Nike Women's Half Marathon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

Some of my fundraisers that you can participate in are; Laser Tag, Movie Night, Donation of Garage Sale item, buying a hand made Tie Dye t-shirt or just click the donate button to help me reach my goal and advance LLS's mission.

I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress and dates on for my fundraisers. Thanks for your support!
