Training to Save Lives!

Training to Save Lives!
Oct 03, 2008 by Nikki Makar

Howdy! Thanks for taking the time to check out my page. I'm currently training for my very first triathlon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. My teammates and I will be competing in the Lavaman Triathlon on March 29, 2009 while raising money for blood cancer research along the way . I'd really like to thank to all those who donated and helped me reach my fundraising goal from the bottom of my heart. I am truly appreciative and I couldn't have done this without your support.

Week 20: 3/16 - 3/22 (1 WEEK TO GO!!!)

This is it, Ladies and Gents.... the final week. All the hard work is done and all that's left is RACE DAY! I can't help but look back on the last 20 weeks and how far I've come. Starting out on this crazy adventure... I could barely run for 20 minutes. Now I'm about to confindently run over 6 miles - after a almost a mile swim and 25 miles bike! How's that for progress? Coach Pete wrote that "The Race is a Celebration of our Journey," and what a journey it has been! Although I was told from the start that this would be a life changing experience, I would never have guessed to what extent. Mentally, physically, and emotionally I have grown so much stronger. I am totally ready for this race. To steal another quote from Coach Pete's email, "It's harder to reach the starting line than the finish line". My big goal for this race is to not walk at all during the run (except through aid stations if I need a drink). I'll be happy with finishing in under 4 hours and really happy if I finish in under 3:45. Check back for a race recap to see how well I did! (That update *may* be a little delayed due to traveling and multiple trips!) Time to go pack!!

"Nikki, Thanks for including us in this very worthy cause. As you know, Uncle John lost his wonderful brother earlier this year to leukemia. There is a void in all our hearts for our loss. Our thoughts will be with you while you train and compete. Love, Aunt Joanne and Uncle John"

"Dear Nikki, Hi, my name is Angela and my brother's name is Peter -- we are friends of Evan & Irene. Our dad was diagnosed with T-cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in October of '06 and we lost him 3 short months later. When Evan told us that you would be "Training to Save Lives," we were so touched and have been wanting to make a contribution. Lymphoma is an awful disease, but it is people like you who inspire us all to help find a cure. It's been 2 years since we lost our dad, but today, March 9th, would have been his 66th birthday. We thought that it would be most fitting to make a contribution, in his memory, to support you in your goals and to help stop this devastating disease. We wish you a safe trip to Hawaii, and as you are powering up those hills, we hope you will remember our dad, Eleftherios P. Aloupis. He was a strong and loving man and we thank you for this opportunity to give in his name. We have heard wonderful things about you and hope to meet you the next time you are in DC!"
