This page was created in memory of Wendy Orozco Garcia. Wendy, a resident of Ridgeland, South Carolina and member of the Beaufort/Bluffton Team in Training had begun training in May to complete the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco, CA, on October 15, 2011. Tragically, Wendy’s life was taken in an automobile accident on Friday, September 9, 2011, before she could complete this goal she had set for herself.

Wendy Garcia, 29, was a loving wife and mother of three young boys. She worked as an Administrative Assistant with a public health agency where she had been employed for over 5 years. Fun-loving, fiesty, graceful, dependable, beautiful, and loyal are all words that could describe this ambitious woman.

In 2007, Wendy was unexpectedly diagnosed with Lymphoma but won her battle with the disease after months of treatment. During that time, her resilience, strength, and will to triumph were never questioned. Friends and family of this young mother were astounded by her courage and the determination in which she lived her life, and she became an example of victory to all of those who knew her.

At any given day, Wendy could be found at little league ballgames, school functions, or family gatherings. The joys of her life were her children, Pablo, Frankie, and Jacob, who often accompanied her on short 5K marathons and fun runs as she trained to run the 13 mile Team in Training half-marathon. During the past several months, Wendy had energetically and excitedly planned fundraisers and creatively raised money to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in hopes of finding a cure. However, only 5 weeks shy of crossing the finishing line, Wendy’s life was cut short. Her dream to fund and find the cure lives on. Donations may still be made to the LLS Team in Training through “Team Wendy” to help realize this dream.

Donations may be made to the team as a whole or to a particular member by selecting their name. The memory of Wendy and her sons, Frankie and Jacob, remain in the hearts and lives of those who loved them. Thank you for joining in this fight and for keeping Wendy’s dream alive. Though we know she crossed the ultimate “finish line,” friends and teammates continue to cheer her on in the race to a cure.

"I never had the chance to meet you, but I have heard many wonderful things about you. The last thing you said to my mom was that all you wanted for your birthday were for donations to be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, so this is for you. Happy Birthday Wendy."
