I headed out without a ton of energy today to do my biggest hill climb yet, Glendora Mountain Road. This trail winds its way through the Angeles National Forest. The view above is along the first half of the trek overlooking the San Gabriel Canyon and Reservoir. Overall the route is 45 miles in length and climbs 4500 vertical feet starting in Glendora and ending up in Mt. Baldy Villiage at the base of the 10,000 ft. mountain. It was a chilly ride, and the weather threatened to dump rain throughout the ride. Alas, I made it without getting wet, but the descent from 4500 feet at 20 to 40 miles per hour made it a bit chilly. Second photo, beginning the descent - Mt. Baldy in the background. Next week, distance....

Once again, thanks for everyone's support, physically, emotionally and financially. Each and every week I learn of someone else in my network, friends, family and colleagues who have been touched by leukemia or lymphoma. My heart and prayers are with you all for your strength and courage.

Training has been going very well. Last week I rode 65 miles and climbed over 3200 feet in elevation! Whew! I rode part of the way up to Mt. San Antionio (Mt. Baldy), which many of you know is just out my back door, then began my ascent up the Glendora Ridge Canyon, a route that winds 22 miles and eventually connects in the town of Mt. Baldy village. I won't be able to ride a long distance this week due to a conference; but will attempt to "connect the dots" next week. Thus far I'm on track with the team's distances and mileage. I can't wait until May when I am able to ride with them on Saturday mornings! As I continue to talk with people about my ride, I find more and more people who are directly or indirectly affected by Leukemia or Lymphoma. I pedal for each and every one of you, and you help drive me to continue! Thank you!

What a glorious day and an equally beautiful ride! Today we rode up the Pacific Coast Highway from Malibu toward Ventura. It was my first chance to ride with the team and learn some of the things I'd only read about thus far such as paceling. The "rollers", as Charlie our coach calls them, were nice and challenging for our hill climbs! All in all we logged 39 miles, and 2000 feet in elevation in about 3 hours. Not a bad day! I won't be able to ride with the team again until May, but it was quite the experience....in the meantime, Go Team!

Wednesday, March 10, 2010 - Update

I easily logged 15 and 10 miles yesterday and today in preparation for my first ride with the team this Saturday in Malibu. We are expected to ride 38 miles and it should be nice weather for a change. I am slightly ahead of pace as I rode 45 miles last week and 40 the week prior. However, fatigue set in at about the 32 mile marker where I needed to refuel with a bottle of Gatorade to make it back home. This day I rode Baseline to San Bernadino and back. Big Bear in the background was a beautiful backdrop!

I'm training to participate in the 100-Mile bicycle ride around Lake Tahoe on June 5, 2010 as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training. All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help stop leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking more lives. I am completing this event not only in honor of all individuals who are battling blood cancers, but also in honor of Ben Frauenholtz. Ben is the son of good friends and was diagnosed over a year and a half now. Ben and all people battling this type of cancer are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

My thoughts and prayers are always with Ben and his family, but there is more that we can do! Please make a donation to support my participation in Team In Training and help advance LLS's mission.

I hope you will visit my web site often. Be sure to check back frequently to see my progress. Thanks for your support!
