Cancer.
How many people have been affected by it? How many more will be diagnosed with it?
A total of 34,500 childhood cancer deaths were reported in the United States during 1990--2004. A total of 2,223 cancer deaths occurred in 2004; among these, leukemias were the most common diagnoses (25.5%) [Trends in Childhood Cancer Mortality, 2007]
The leukemia death rate for children 0 to 14 years of age in the United States has declined 88 percent from 1969 to 2006. Despite this decline, leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under age 20. About 460 children under the age of 15 are expected to die from leukemia in 2009. [The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 2009]
In third grade, I wrote the names of friends on the back of brightly colored valentines like all of my classmates. This was still the "boys have cooties" stage, but there was one of my classmates that every boy and girl alike admired: David Gaspar- great athlete, extremely nice, and somewhat shy. I cried buckets when my friends found and teased me endlessly about the valentine I had written for him but David, whom I sat next to at the time, accepted the valentine with a quiet "thank you."
David was diagnosed with leukemia in 1991. Other than knowing he spent weeks in a hospital, none of us really understood what the disease entailed, let alone comprehending how slim his chances were for kicking the ball in the playground again.
In 1992, I attended my first funeral.
David died at the age of 9.
I'm a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team In Training.
I am training for Vineman, an Ironman that takes place July 31st, 2010.
Ironman:
2.4 mile swim
112 mile bike
26.2 mile run
All of us on Team In Training are raising funds to help research towards stopping leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma from taking lives. We're swimming, biking, and running in honor of those who have fought or continue to fight these diseases.
What does this mean to you?
It means that you can help people research and develop new ways to prevent these blood cancers and find a cure.
Please donate to this amazing cause.
Let's stop this disease from taking any more lives.
Let's find a cure.
