WALKING to Save Lives

Friends and Family... Thank you for taking the time to view my online fundraising page.

I want you all to be aware of an enormous challenge and commitment that I have made.

Over the past few years, I have had multiple family members who are battling, have lost their lives or lost a loved one to cancer. As I write this... I can't help but remember crying when I found out that my own father had been diagnosed with cancer, and I remember the feeling of being totally overwhelmed with fear, helplessness and wishing that I could take his place. It is painful memory that I will never forget.

Cancer comes in many forms, but Leukemia is the #1 killing disease of children. As a child, it was not easy watching my parent go through such a humbling disease, but I cannot imagine being a parent watching their child go through the effects of cancer and all that curing it entails.

The good news is that there is something we can all do to help.

On January 21st, I attend an informational meeting about helping find a cure to Leukemia & Lymphoma by running in a marathon to raise money. While there I met a little boy name Kalon Beeson who was around the age of my son, Dylan. He spoke to us with enthusiasm and repeatedly thanked us for "just being here". I could not help but imagine "What if this was Dylan?" Kalon's mother, so proud and determined, sat behind me, and I could not help thinking "What if that was me?" As a mother, I cannot imagine what it feels like to wake up every morning knowing that your child has the #1 killing disease for children. I could not help but to be in awe of this woman and wonder "how does she still have a smile on her face?"

It wasn't hard for me to make the decision to run this race after having met Kalon and his mother. It was then and there that I realized that if this little boy and this woman can just be thankful for being there... just appreciative of being alive, if they can get up every morning and run the race of their lives, then I can and will run 26.2 miles in their honor, and I will fight like hell for them. It is a small price to pay to give 16 weeks of my life in return for a healthy little boy that is just "happy to be here".

So, in loving memory of my Zia Maria and in honor of my father, my cousin Marisa, Kalon Beeson, his courageous mother and all who have fought or are fighting cancer, I have personally committed, hopefully with your help, to raise $3650.00 for this great cause. The great thing is that 75 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for Patient Education, Financial Aid for patients, and Research, and all donations are tax deductible.

In celebration of reaching this enormous goal, I plan to train and run the Team in Training, Seattle Rock 'N' Roll Marathon (yes that is 26.2 miles and it could very well be raining...) on June 26th, 2010. I would be honored to be your voice, your legs and to run for you in honor of your loved one as well. If you have a picture of anyone that you would like to honor, please forward it to me, and I would be proud to have it pinned to my jersey during this event.

Please consider joining me in support of this worthy cause by making a tax deductible contribution. Whatever you can give would be greatly appreciated, as it all adds up. You can donate this cause here through my online fundraising page or mail a check made payable to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to me (email me at stephanie@intagliata.com for my address).

Also, Please check with your employer as many companies will match employee donations. I will be tracking my fundraising progress carefully so your response by June 11th, 2010 will be appreciated.

I will also be hosting a garage sale in April (date to be determined at a later date) and will be accepting donations during this event as well. 100% of all proceeds received from this sale will be donated to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

With your help, on June 26th, I will cross the finish line along with thousands of other runners in hopes of achieving our ultimate goal... a cure.
